To those who mock Communication degrees from universities. |
|
It is the study of communication that has gotten our media, politicians, and lobbyists where they are today. It will require the study of communication by more, not fewer people, to help us out of this mess. Communications between humans is not a simple affair and there is quite a bit of rigorous, scholarly research on the topic. The theories are applied in newsrooms, speech writing, as well as face to face persuasion - from car sales to political lobbying.

I am re-reading 1984, and it is so frightening to me, I can't even read it before I go to sleep. My children were required to take "propaganda" as a class in grade school. When they noticed the pack of playing card with pictures of the most wanted terrorists, they held them up, "Mom! Propaganda!"

2. Yep. I'm an English major. It's to be expected. |
|
Like their brothers in Republican economic cheerleading, to these people it's almost as if it's not a real degree unless it's math/science/law based. DU also has exclusive IT/syntax snobs, a sheer hilarity to read.

4. As stated in Harry Potter when Ms. McGonagall criticizes studying divination: |

"Oh, Minerva, we all think our own subjects are the most important."

3. Who was mocking communication degrees?? |
|
I got a minor in broadcasting just for fun. Of course I didn't go into broadcasting after college though cause I wanted to make real money instead of minimum wage.

6. I have no problem with a Communications Degree. I do have a real problem |
|
with people who take out $100,000 loans knowing full well the ramifications of the student loan and then whining about it after they graduate.

But whenever that topic comes up, communication study bashing seems to follow.
Also, I personally doubt many 19-22 year olds know "full well the ramifications of the student loan" when they are being told they won't make it anywhere in the job force without a degree by people who seem very authoritative and knowledgeable.
No college before 30. New law. hahahahaha

11. You refer to another interesting point. |
|
When I took out a student loan 30 years ago, my father had to co-sign the loan, even though I was 20 years old. It was only for $2,500, but he felt it was a good way to build my credit. Can I assume that parents do not have to co-sign on these loans?
Where are the parents in these situations? Shouldn't they be advising their kids? Or can kids get students loans today without any parental supervision?

12. I have worked at a university for 9 years, but never in the financial aid area. |
|
Without knowing for sure, I suspect the students over 18 do not need parental permission to sign for a loan either by law or by nature of a student loan. Still, many are first generation college students of working class families who, I feel, are likely to support their kids' education "no matter what".
Not sure though. I am 36 and my wife is 33 and we get our financial aid in BIG chunks. Unbelievable, I imagine, if one is 20-something.

10. Not to mention Communication can be an excellent minor for a plethora of majors. |
|
I'm surprised there are people mocking the value of communication skills. It's a vital tool.
