anyone remember the big stink repugs made over Terri Schiavo
they are now advocating assisted suicides for seniors

Law should allow choice of death over dementia
We need a physician-assisted suicide law in Florida.

Only we should go beyond the laws approved by voters in Washington and Oregon.

They allow people with terminal diseases to obtain a lethal prescription of drugs from a doctor.

This does not include dementia patients. Our law should.
Individuals should be able to choose now that they would rather die with dignity than be shipped off to die of end-stage Alzheimer's in a for-profit Medicaid warehouse.

4. During the Schiavo affair, my mother was dying slowly in a hospital in Dallas.
We had taken her off of the drip that was keeping her essentially living. She had just turned 94 and had stopped eating in February after breaking her arm in a fall.

I was really nervous that some hospital official (perhaps influenced by Tom DeLay who was heard from a LOT at that time) would reinstate the drip, something my mother's will forbade. We were able to assemble what family was alive at the time and say goodbye.

She died peacefully and gently and in no pain 6 years ago yesterday. She would be 100 years old today. I do not commemorate the date of her death because I prefer to keep the memory of her life in the forefront.

5. When I read this,it reminds me of SO many of my patients
To every thing, there is a season.
The process of dying is a normal event-one that should be provided with dignity and comfort.
Bless you.

8. Thanks. It was hard because, as I put it, I had known her all my life!
It feels like you have lost a loving presence in your life! But she clearly did not wish to live any longer. My only sibling, my brother, had died the previous May and I think that was too much for her to deal with.
