Turtle Bay misses out on $7 million grant; park to scale down plans for museum entry

Turtle Bay Exploration Park failed to make the cut for a $7 million state grant for museum expansion.

The organization had intended the grant to fund a new main museum entrance and visitor gallery off the Sundial Bridge plaza, where foot and bike traffic is heaviest.

Turtle Bay will go ahead with those plans without the grant — but likely downscale them, spokesman Toby Osborn said Tuesday.

Turtle Bay also will press ahead with plans to build a 130-room Sheraton hotel and adjoining 80-seat restaurant on the parking lot south of the museum and just west of the Paul Bunyan Forest Camp, Osborn said.

The gist of the story is that they were planning to use public money to build a new building so that a building that was built with public money less than 10 years ago can be turned into the lobby for a for-profit hotel that is being built to attract visitors to the convention center that's closing because the city has no money to keep it open. :banghead:
