I just learned that my aunt keep a hummingbird in her freezer because she thought it was pretty (it was already dead and she works for animal control, so it isn't THAT strange.)

And as a boy with deep Kentucky roots I suspect that I know some folks who would've kept squirrels in their freezer, if only they'd had a freezer. Or a fridge. Or an icebox. Squirrel's good eatin'!

We live in Las Vegas, where there aren't even squirrels or fleas or mosquitos, but this guy's yard keeps getting infested with bizarre animals. An endangered tortoise (native to the Mojave, but certainly not native to the suburbs), a pair of hairless cats, some kind of endangered squirrel (not native to anywhere within a 1000 miles), gophers, chipmunks...none of this stuff lives in the desert, except this one guy's yard.

One of the hairless cats killed one of the chipmunks and he was afraid it might be on the endangered list, so he keeps it in the freezer as proof that he didn't kill it himself.

I'd think there was something up with him, like dealing with exotic animals illegally or something, but I've known him since we were in middle school; I was the best man at his wedding and the godfather of his oldest son. The guy's as straight an arrow as they come.

Now that I think about it, he posted on Facebook the other day that he thinks there might be a parrot hanging around. So, yeah, there's at least one person I know in real life with a chipmunk in his freezer with a valid explanation.

28. Me loves chipmunks and squirrels. Where I used to live we had a huge colony of both

and they did not like each other at all. We had separate feeders, one with peanuts and corn for the squirrels and one with sunflower seeds for the chipmunks. The chipmunks are definitely smarter. They'd go in the squirrel feeders and kick out the food so they could eat it off the ground.


I miss that a lot. Neither at my apartments.
