UPDATE 3-Storms knock out TVA nuclear units, power lines
Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:21am GMT

* Severe storms moving across TVA transmission area
* Rainfall boosts hydro output along Tennessee River

* Nuclear reactors shut after losing outside power (Updates power status at nuclear plant)

HOUSTON, April 27 (Reuters) - Severe storms and tornadoes moving through the U.S. Southeast dealt a severe blow to the Tennessee Valley Authority on Wednesday, causing three nuclear reactors in Alabama to shut and knocking out 11 high-voltage power lines, the utility and regulators said.

Governors in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee each declared a state of emergency as more than 20 deaths were blamed on a recurring round of severe storms this week moving eastward across the southern United States.

All three units at TVA's 3,274-megawatt Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama tripped about 5:30 EDT (2230 GMT) after losing outside power to the plant, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said...

...The Browns Ferry units are among 23 U.S. reactors that are similar in design to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan where backup generators were swept away in the tsunami that followed the massive earthquake on March 11...

1. And if Arne Gunderson knew anything about radiation science, his opinion might be relevent.
But he has a grand total of zero experience with commercial or military nuclear reactors--he's a math teacher who's cashing in on the industry of scaring people.

2. Conservative crackpots hate math - and math teachers!
They think they are insulting someone by calling him a math teacher!
"He's evil! He teaches the occult science of mathematics! Burn him!"

5. I'm just following the rules!
We address the right in harsh terms, and we fully intend to make the word "conservative" absolutely radioactive. In that spirit, DU has already gained countrywide notoriety as the originator of the weekly Top Ten Conservative Idiots list ...

- from "About Democratic Underground" at http://www.democraticunderground.com/about.html

I bend the rules a little, calling them "crackpots" instead of "idiots"...

4. Senate testimony by NRC Chairman: "Everything Mr. Gundersen said was absolutely right"
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 02:35 AM by bananas
Arnie Gundersen has an excellent reputation.

In a 1993 congressional hearing,
in response to a question by Committee Chairman Senator John Glenn,
NRC Chairman Ivan Selin testified:
"Everything Mr. Gundersen said was absolutely right; he performed quite a service"

Some of you are learning what many in Vermont did:

"What Arnie Gundersen Says About Yankee Eventually Becomes Truth About Yankee"

"Batting 1,000 on Yankee"
"Turns out he was right the whole time. There was a dramatic shift in the couple's recent appearances before legislative committees. Even pro-nuclear Republicans now look at the couple knowing they know what they are talking about."
