Australian TV comedy show on royal wedding axed
– Wed Apr 27, 10:48 pm ET

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) – An Australian TV comedy show on the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has been axed after the BBC banned usage of its live feed for comedy, satirical or entertainment purposes.

The "Chaser" show, which had planned a live programme with comments on the wedding in the style of news shows to make fun of the royal family, was to appear on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) network.

But the show was cut after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) said footage of the wedding on Friday could not be used for comedy, satirical or entertainment purposes, as in line with previous royal broadcasts, said a ABC spokesman.

"My personal view is I really think the BBC needs to lighten up a bit and just get a bit of a sense of humor," Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd told local television.

1. Aww, I thought the Chaser's were cancelled. That would've been epic beyond words!

2. Not going down well with fans of The Chaser.

Personally, while I think that sometimes they can be very clever and funny, at other times their humour is just schoolboyish. But the whole idea of censoring them makes me mad. And their demographic are the younger age groups, who have so far been noncommittal to the idea of an Australian Republic. They're angry, and already some are threatening, via Twitter, to become republicans. Yeay!!

This is so old-fashioned and out of touch, and the BBC are a bunch of grovelling sycophants.

Edited to add: For those who may have forgotten, it was The Chaser team who famously drove straight through the security surrounding the APEC Conference in 2007, with G.W. Bush in attendance. Left John Howard with egg all over his face.
