House passes host of new abortion restrictions (Florida)

TALLAHASSEE — After four hours of emotionally fraught debate, the Florida House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a range of new restrictions on abortions that would restrict health-insurance coverage of the procedure, ban most abortions after a fetus is "viable" and require women seeking an abortion to first review an ultrasound in hopes that they would choose to reverse their decision after seeing the images.

"It doesn't matter whether that baby drives a truck or flips burgers at McDonald's or takes Rep. Brodeur's seat over there — it's all going to be worth it," said Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda, a physician.

The focus of the day's debate was the so-called "ultrasound" bill, passed last year but vetoed by then-Gov. Charlie Crist. Lawmakers set aside 100 minutes for arguments, which featured emotional outbursts — and personal stories — from members of both parties.

Rep. James Grant, R-Tampa, revealed that his parents were told that he was going to be born severely disabled, and he said they decided to go through with the pregnancy because "they believed in life." There was no reason, he said, for women not to understand the status of the fetus when they seek an abortion.

9. I don't believe that story for a second.
What doctor just says, "Your child will be born severely disabled"? Severely disabled in what way and due to what cause? What was the diagnosis?

It seems like every anti-choicer has had some version of that story happen to them or to someone they know - "...and the doctors really pressured them to abort, but they didn't and guess what? The doctors were wrong!"

3. I suppose I am just old and mentally deficient
but I will never understand how a national or state government can tell us what we can or can not do with our own bodies. Were they there at our births and welcomed us into this world by saying I Own You!? It seems to go against any- and everything we are taught to believe about our country. We are not free if someone else is pulling our strings.

"for women not to understand the status of the fetus when they seek an abortion."

'cause Women are so stupid and emotional and decide one bright morning to visit the Abortion Center.

"Well...Mary, I was thinking...today is SUCH a lovely day...maybe I'll go to the park this afternoon but first stop-off at the center and get an Abortion."

My Dear Mother must be turning over in her grave. Sigh...

5. What gets me is that repukes want government out of their miserable
lives and then pass something like this! The hypocrisy is astounding but it will go un-noticed by the right wing idiots. What's next? the voting rights of women?

7. Repukes want government out of THEIR lives.
THEY are righteous and always do the right thing and make the right decisions. The rest of us, on the other hand, can't be trusted to decide things for ourselves - especially those of us who are inferior beings like women and minorities.

10. best anti-woman b-sticker ever:
"Thanks, Mom ... I was BORN!!"

The all-caps was also italicized, as in ... "like duh!!"

Repubs on state level are focused on social agenda while on federal level they dismantle earned entitlement. I'm beginning to get a sinking feeling that we're all screwed ... they've got the $ ...
