MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A state Senate committee has approved a House-passed bill to crack down on illegal immigration.
The Senate Job Creation and Economic Development Committee voted 6-0 on Thursday for the bill by Republican Rep. Micky Hammon. The bill now goes to the Senate.
Hammon's bill is similar to one already passed by the Senate, except it requires businesses to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm that new employees are legal.
The committee also approved an administration-backed bill to provide small businesses with an one-year income tax credit of $1,000 for each new job they create that pays more than $10 per hour. The bill by Republican Rep. Blaine Galliher has already been approved by the House.
