Madison —One of the leaders of the Legislature's budget committee said Thursday she opposes a plan by Gov. Scott Walker to use general tax money to pay for state highways.

"That was never the intention to put (general tax money) into the transportation fund," said Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills), co-chairwoman of the Joint Finance Committee. "We're having a big debate in our caucus as to whether it's appropriate to use (general tax money) in the transportation fund."

The other leader of the committee, Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester), said he stood behind the governor's transportation plan because it helps put more money toward transportation without raising the 32.9-cent-per-gallon gas tax.

"I think that's a creative and innovative way to do that," he said.

Anytime Walker gets creative we should all be worried.
