That is the difference. I am sure the President is happy for Matthews to expose birtherism for what it is.

I think his quarrel was with News Organizations who uncritically promoted Trump, et all and presented Birtherism as it it were possibley true. It is the media's job to debunk this kind of crap, not promote it.
