Professor responds to Breitbart's 'expose'; she's now getting death threats
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 06:36 PM by proud2BlibKansan
Tuesday I posted about a college professor who was punked by Breitbart.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x965562

This professor is a friend of mine and I was shocked to hear her accused of advocating violent union tactics. It just didn't make any sense.

Today she posted a reply on Breitbart's blog. And she reports she is being threatened.

Breitbart is a master of taking quotes out of context, deletion of what doesn’t serve his purpose, and remixing to achieve totally different meaning. For example he has me saying:

o Breitbart’s version: “Violence is a tactic and it’s to be used when it’s the appropriate tactic.”

o The real version: After students had watched a film on the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike and the assassination of Martin Luther King, they were discussing nonviolence. I said, “One guy in the film. . . said ‘violence is a tactic, and it’s to be used when it’s the appropriate tactic.’ . . . “ The class proceeded to discuss and debate this.

There are a number of other instances of very creative editing including:

o A change of clothes by Don Giljum from one sentence to another

These videos are no idle prank. They do real harm. Both Don and I are receiving threats and ugly and scary messages. There are death threats against us on Breitbart’s blog.

1. Death threats are their way of reacting to any situation
Fortunately most of them are cowards and don't have the cojones to follow up on their threats.

Unfortunately, it only takes one.

2. A different term should be used instead of creative editing.
Not to criticize you just creative editing seems such a nice term. And we need to use the language more effectively.

12. I didn't use that term
The professor did. And since she's under attack, I'm going to refrain from criticizing her choice of words.

14. Then she was being nice.
But when others in the media or us in our groups... we shouldn't be quite so nice.

She had to be as she was acting in her capacity as a teacher.

6. They can trace the IPs. This is an assault on your/her 1st amendment rights.

Not from government, no. These things are potent intimidation, as we know the history of rightwing assassinations and assaults.

But they are trying to prevent you speaking on a political matter, which the 1st amendment protects.

Sorry you're having to deal with these thugs, when you're simply participating in the political process like any good citizen should.

Let us know what comes of this.

Here's a column a local reporter did:

8. Sue. Brietbart.
This stuff has got to be stopped each and every time it happens. Involve the FBI and get counsel. Enough is enough.

10. Statement from the university:
The University of Missouri-Kansas City continues to review approximately 18 hours of unedited video from the Labor, Politics and Society class. From the review completed to date, it is clear that edited videos posted on the Internet depict statements from the instructors in an inaccurate and distorted manner by taking their statements out of context and reordering the sequence in which those statements were actually made so as to change their meaning. Such selective editing is disturbing and the release of students’ images without their permission is a violation of their privacy rights.

17. TIME (01/01/06): Police undercover agent Merrell McCullough (a mole in the entourage)

"I Have Seen The Promised Land" - TIME
King walked ahead of Kyles to look over the handrail outside, down on a bustling scene in the parking lot. Police undercover agent Marrell McCullough (a mole in the entourage) parked almost directly below, returning with SCLC staff members James Orange and James Bevel from a shopping trip to buy overalls. Orange unfolded his massive frame from McCullough's little blue Volkswagen, tussling with Bevel, and Andrew Young stepped up to rescue Bevel by shadow-boxing at a distance. King called down benignly from the floor above for Orange to be careful with preachers half his size. McCullough and Orange walked back to talk with two female college students who pulled in just behind them. Jesse Jackson emerged from the rehearsal room, which reminded King to extend his rapprochement. "Jesse, I want you to come to dinner with me," he said.

Kyles, overhearing on his way down the balcony stairs, told King not to worry because Jackson already had secured his own invitation. Abernathy shouted from Room 306 for King to make sure Jackson did not try to bring his whole Breadbasket band, while Chauncey Eskridge was telling Jackson he should upgrade from turtleneck to necktie for dinner. Jackson called up to King: "Doc, you remember Ben Branch?" He said Breadbasket's lead saxophonist and song leader was a native of Memphis.

"Oh, yes, he's my man," said King. "How are you, Ben?" Branch waved. King recalled his signature number from Chicago. "Ben, make sure you play Precious Lord, Take My Hand in the meeting tonight," he called down. "Play it real pretty."

"O.K., Doc, I will."

Solomon Jones, the volunteer chauffeur, called up to bring coats for a chilly night. There was no reply. Time on the balcony had turned lethal, which left hanging the last words fixed on a gospel song of refuge. King stood still for once, and his sojourn on earth went blank.
