SF to LA: We love you guys!
Seriously, I just don't get the inter-Californian madness that is NorCal v SoCal...

SF and LA are two completely different cities. So are Oakland and SF. And San Jose and Oakland. And San Jose and SF.

Yeah, its really spread out, but as a lifelong California native, there are some very beautiful things not available in SF.

For example:

- Burbank. Now, I know what you're going to say. "Burbank????" But take a look at it sometime. Lots of old classic California Bungalow homes, kept up very well. An airport that is smaller than OAK yet services as many airlines as SJC. And there's that whole 'on the other side of the hill' thing.

- Downtown LA. If you were talk to my maternal grandparents, they would have nothing good to say about downtown. "All those Mexicans! And do you know what they're doing? Do you know? Well I saw and they're doing MEXICAN things!" But Sunday afternoon in downtown LA is nothing short of sublime. Lots of great street food, lots of families, and the language is not English. It's Spanish. And it's beautiful.

- Venice. We all know of the famous Venicians...Henry Rollins, Jim Morrison, Russell T Davies, Nic Cage, etc. But not only that, but there is a distinct hippie sufer vibe to this place. Great food, relaxed atmosphere and, well, it's VENICE! Which brings us to...

-Santa Monica. Where President Bartlett was Mayor Sheen. Again, really cool old Golden-Age-of-Hollywood homes, all over the hills, but also near that Pier/Promenade thingy. Oh, and everyone you see will be attractive, in the true sense of the world. If the men and women are overweight, they're CUTE and overweight.

3. these are all nice enough places...
But they're just an attractive garnish around the centerpiece, Sonoma County. :)

On a more serious note, I don't understand the rivalry either. There are really beautiful parts of California all over the state, in both red and blue counties. I'm very fortunate to live here.

HEAVENLY stop-over in San Francisco with my daughter when we were driving back home from her college farther north. What a great time we had all over downtown San Francisco - the food, the view, the crazy driving and roads and hills and people - just really wonderful! There's no view like the one over the Bay.

 :hi: :yourock: :patriot:

8. I took a cool ride from SF to Tiburon on a sunny day a couple years back
All bike path, other than guessing the wrong way to get to the Ferry and having to double back it was a very cool ride.

9. I am not brave enough to ride in SF.
I used to ride from Hermosa Beach to Santa Monica round trip, about 17 miles. Loved it.

SF is a freakin' nightmare for bicyclists.

I will definitely investigate this bike patch of which you speak. I miss riding.

Thanks for the tip. :hi:

7. I don't see many NoCal/SoCal issues
Both have a lot of great things, the sunny beaches in SoCal, the scenic redwoods up north. Palm Springs, Napa Valley, Yosemite, Santa Barbara.

And we all agree Fresno is a hell hole!

And yes, there is a lot to do in LA, highly recomend your Olvera street day. Take a train into Union Station and spend a day walking around. If you don't like Mexican food walk a block to Philippe's for a French Dip or walk a few blocks for Chinese food.

I feel like we need a Huell Howser link!

18. Regarding Downtown L.A., the art scene/galleries...
...in the area have really come to life over the last few years.

The monthly art walk (second Thursday of each month) has really taken off, it's a fun night out, not to mention quite a bit of good and maybe even great art by many local (as well as not so local) artists, often at affordable prices. Plus, there are a bunch of bars, cafes, restaurants, as well as live entertainment, etc.

Here is the web site for the Downtown art walk - http://downtownartwalk.org/

Be sure to check out The Hive Gallery if you're in the area: 729 S. Spring St. They have a monthly group show with lots of art for sale, live painters, live musical - and other, such as burlesque - performances.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with The Hive Gallery, although I have shown work there in the past.

15. Herb Caen had a great line: the LA - SF one-way feud
Bay Area sneering at LA is a long-held snottiness, but LA likes the Bay Area.

As someone who lived there for 10 years and has now been in LA for over 20, I have to say that I like them both, which would curl the lip or two up north.

20. Dodger Stadium has gotten a bit weird.
Twenty years ago I took my wife an niece to a SF/LA game and was wearing a Giants cap. Sat in left field bleachers with mostly Spanish speaking Dodger fans. Most had radios tuned to the Spanish broadcast, talked to the father and son behind me and then knew everything about the Dodgers they were throwing detailed stats on what players did in the Minors. Very cool experience. Went to many games in the 90's and always a cool experience, including hearing Tommy Lasorda completely go off on a pitcher who allowed an eight inning HR to a light hitting SD 2nd baseman.

Went to a game a couple years ago and the fans down the right field line just sucked, just drinking, trash talking, twenty-something ladies walking around acting like they were in a dance club, everyone seemed to be there to be seen rather than enjoying the game.

21. I went to a Dodgers - Angels game two years ago.
I brought my dad's friend who was out visiting from Kentucky - and he was an outsider to either team - and just using the bathroom in Dodger Stadium he told me he was scared for his life. Now that says a lot.

24. Sports just brings out the best in people, doesn't it?
As an inveterate non-sports type, I don't tend to find myself at sporting events, but as a parent, sometimes there you are...

The vibe at Dodger Stadium (which is about 2 miles from here) is sort of hostile, as was the feeling at the Angels' Stadium. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast...

25. Angels Stadium is nowhere near as crazy as Dodger Stadium.
But it depends on the visiting team. There's a reason why Arte jacked up the prices for Red Sox and Yankees games 110% this season.
