McDonalds hired 62,000 new workers!!!! * **
* These were almost all part time jobs.

** Over one million people applied for said part-time, low wage jobs.

From Bloomberg:

McDonald’s Corp. (MCD), the world’s biggest restaurant chain, said it hired 24 percent more people than planned during an employment event this month.

McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.

The April 19 national hiring day was the company’s first, said Danya Proud, a McDonald’s spokeswoman. She declined to disclose how many of the jobs were full- versus part-time. McDonald’s employed 400,000 workers worldwide at company-owned stores at the end of 2010, according to a company filing.

5. Actually a part time job is frequently worse than no job at all.
Part-timer's hours usually are spread throughout the entire week. So, you still have to drive back and forth to work 5 to 7 days a week and sometimes they have split shifts which requires 2 round trips. Gas prices are very high.

Then you have to wear half decent clothes. Most places do not provide uniforms but even the ones that do only provide a smock and hat. Then there are child care requirements and lunch. Many McJobs do not give you a free lunch. They make their employees pay for part of the meal. Or I guess you could pack a lunch but that costs money too.

Then there is all the time the job takes from your life. Hours getting groomed, hours traveling back and forth, hours spent on the job. Maybe, a person could better spend that time growing a garden, writing a book or making art they can sell, taking care of the kids, cleaning the house. Many families have found that a part time job is a part time expense.

14. Those that already had McDonalds jobs are probably pretty pissed..
As I recall from my days at the counter, every time there was a new-hire, we all lost a few hours per week, if not more. I once went down from 32 hours to 18 when they hired 3 more people in one week. I promptly got myself hired at Burger King for another 20 per week and worked both jobs for a couple of months without the one knowing about the other.

3. USA! USA! USELESS-A! USED-US-A!!
Can't believe people on this site think that job gains with a weekly wage that's incapable of providing basic needs should be seen as positive news. Yeah, who cares if it can't feed, clothe or house you? A job's a job's a job's a job, RIGHT?

What an absolute disgrace what we've come to accept. Shouldn't we be striving for better than crumbs? How much further does the boot have to go down on the cheek before we say "enough"?

A society that cannot provide itself jobs with livable wages, but a society that thrives on feeding itself cheap, low nutrition, body killing food because it is good for corpo-profits and the people with no jobs can't afford anything else.

The big money is in filming transgendered people getting the crap beat out of them by black girls!

You don't get to see stuff like that working in an office!

7. There are people who only want part time jobs, and this is good for them. There

are teenagers who want to save for college tuition or a car for there senior year.

There are retired people who want to do something other than sit home and play on the computer or watch teevee.

There are people who do not depend on a part time job to keep the bill collectors from hounding them, but simply want something to do and want to be paid a little bit to do it. If they are willing/happy to do this for minimum wage, or they are saving for a car or for tuition, then this kind of job provides that opportunity.

Hooray for Americans who want to get out of the house a little and can get paid for it.

unrec because it's covered nicely in this earlier thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=981949&mesg_id=981949
