Britain considering ban on full-face veils after shocking incident
A woman in London wearing a full-face veil as part of some sort of ancient tribal ritual stopped traffic and caused thousands of onlookers to impede all movement in the Westminster City district today.

Said one spectator, "It is awful the way they completely cover up their wives like that."

The woman was promptly whisked away by a private militia run by her husband's family into a guarded compound, where people familiar with this odd family have said she will likely be kept in seclusion, and only allowed to leave with a chaperone.

5. Barbaric and uncivilized to subject women to such humiliation. Only in an undemocratic country
would this sort of oppression be allowed to continue.

Ban the veil! Ban the wedding dress! Ban the damn tiara!

21. It's sanctioned by the ruling monarchy
Sad how backward some of these countries are still.

When will they finally rise up and throw off their yoke of oppression?

I'm still trying to figure out how they got it to tuck behind the tiara while still draping over it:

13. Yeah
It's probably pinned in from behind.

I dig it. Not as much as those crocheted cap veils from the 20's but this one was perfect for the dress.

30. It complemented the gown instead of overwhelming it
and, at least this time, the royal bride wore her gown, instead of her gown wearing her.

A good night's rest for me is if, at the end of the day, the sheet isn't on the floor.

36. The veil is sewn onto the tiara making it all one piece
And the tiara has combs to keep it in place as they fixed her hair with the tiara embedded in it.

Actually, I used to prepare political asylum cases for a living. I've seen Burqas, Niqabs, Chadors, and interviewed the women who wear them.

Believe me, they are no more considered an imposition by most of the wearers than six-inch heals are to those who endure (and adore) them. It's all culturally relative.

34. I don't understand either one
Haven't worn heels in a couple of decades and as a claustrophobic, the idea of covering my face with anything makes me want to scream. The heel people are doing it for vanity. What reason are the women in the US using for wearing face coverings?

41. I didn't ask that question as its not relevant to the threat of persecution in their homeland.
It seems that women here impute elaborate head and face coverings of Muslim women as a form of persecution, regardless of where these are worn or under what circumstances, whether completely voluntary, or not. That perception is not shared by all the wearers.

Admittedly, most people would feel claustrophobic wearing a fencing mask covered by a Nun's habit and headgear, which is what a burqa basically is. But, to the wearer it may be a reminder of their relationship with the Creator, just as similar outfits are for Catholic Nuns. If hubby makes them wear this, and they'd rather wear a bodice, six inch spiked heals, lipstick, and nothing else, that may be a form of cognizable persecution if it occurs abroad. Here, there is always the divorce courts.

Our extremes of dress and dysfunctions of our social system might seem equally revolting to a religiously observant persons from another land. They have their religions and cultural norms, and we have ours. Viva la difference, provided that nobody can impose one on the other.

You DID notice that Catherine refused to utter "to obey"? That at 29 she is marrying a man of her age and of her choice; that she is not age 13 being forced into a "marriage" with some 45-year-old loser with three other wives?

A wedding vail is ceremonial and one can easily breathe through it for the 30 minutes that it is being worn.

And while it is appalling that this woman was forced to hide behind a veil, that is nothing compared to the number of women wearing HATS I had to sift through as I desperately search for actual NEWS today.

Hats, hats, hats!!!

Apparently, earlier today, London was invaded by women wearing all manner of odd head gear. I can only assume that the corwds out side were screaming in horror (I had the sound turned down) as what appeared to be thousands of women in hats took London by storm.

Ok ..... maybe, just maybe, based on the replies to this thread, the rod up the DU butt must have a rod up its butt!!
