Maddow: Mich. gov. thinks democracy a ‘problem’
Source: Raw Story
By David Edwards

The decision-making authority of elected officials in Benton Harbor, Michigan was suspended under a new emergency manager law passed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

In a speech Wednesday, Snyder said he also wanted to abolish the minimum number of hours children are required to be in school. He announced that he was targeting 23 school districts for takeover by state-appointed unilateral executives.

“Every single one of those places has just been told that them having locally elected officials, that’s a problem,” MSNBC Rachel Maddow explained Thursday. “That democracy is in the way of making things more efficient in Michigan, that Democracy is not the way we fix problems in America, that it is a problem.”

1. It is a problem if you believe in rule by edict.
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 12:31 PM by RandomThoughts
And the reason they think it is a problem, is they think they are better or should rule.

It is rooted in superiority complex, and not seeing the better parts of other talents, attributes, or skills.

The smart person may not see the value of the compassionate person, the virtuous not seeing the value of the courageous, etc...

So someone thinks they are superior, when they don't know what it is, as nobody can, since they do not know things from every perspective.

2. I don't understand how any of that is Constitutional
It's beyond belief that a Governor could behave like a dictator and just nullify the votes of the citizens by removing those who were duly elected.

4. I don't like misleading headlines
from any source. Mich. gov. thinks democracy a ‘problem’ is Rachel's interpretation of Snyder's stance and not something he said to the best of my knowledge.

5. It is a quote, and yes, it is someone's opinion.
And yes, it's in 'General Discussion'.

7. I was wrong...
...now that I read it with my eyes open it seems pretty clear
they are saying it's Rachel's thoughts as to Snyder's intentions.
Fair enough.

6. What Mayor Bernero described in his citique of the Snyder system is crony capitalism
Not only that, but crony capitalism to end all crony capitalism. The capitalist gets to take over government functions and rule as a dictator.

The US Constitution gives the federal government the power to guarantee that each state shall have a Republican form of government. So, why is no one talking about sending federal troops into those parts of Michigan that have been taken over by Governor Snyder's proconsuls in order to restore the democratically elected officials? Somebody in the administration should talk about exactly that out loud. Or is Obama listening too closely to the Goldman Sachs mafia?

8. IF this were happening in Tennessee.........
(and even though it's not) I would urge the elected officials of these towns that are being forced into fascism to stand up to this tin pot dictator and CONTINUE to do their jobs. Let's see who the PEOPLE believe in and follow.

It's a type of dual governing that was the hallmark of the 1917 Russian revolutionary year. The Kerensky government had their people in place in the towns and the Bolsheviks/Social Revolutionaries had the Soviets (worker and governing councils) doing the same governing jobs. The PEOPLE followed the Soviets. Who would the PEOPLE of Michigan follow?
