'This is the only wedding that matters': Detroit couple marries at White Castle
The perfect headline for that perfect day.

'This is the only wedding that matters': Detroit couple marries at White Castle

For Donahvan Gray and Marquisa Benford, getting married at White Castle simply made sense.

The pair met at the location on Dequindre Road near Twelve Mile in Warren in 2009. Less than a year later, Gray knew Benford was the one.

"I've been wanting to get married for the past 14 months," Gray, 21, said after saying "I do" to Benford in the restaurant's lobby. "We didn't have the money, so we didn't put anything together."

Enter 98.7 AMP Radio, which held a contest for Metro Detroit listeners who wanted to marry on the same day as that other couple everyone is talking about. Gray and Benford's tale of meeting at White Castle, and eating there almost every day since, won out over other entries.

"I am a fan of the old school, greasy greasy spoon sliders that used to be available at many places. If it's vegetarian health food you want, keep on looking. Nice little hamburgers, lots of cooked onions, bag soaked with grease before you get to the car...oh yeah, that's ..."‎ ‎ - Feb 9, 2011

"A slider, by rule, should have indulgence governed by the fortitude of one's stomach. It should be created by an old man or woman behind a steaming griddle, who should be retired by now. It should have a bun saturated by grease, and oozing with onion. It should be served out of ..."‎ ‎ - Jan 11, 2011

I lived nearby in the 1980s and live far away now, but this is a must go anytime I drive to the airport. Looks like an old Bray's Burger stand, and even though it is called "Giant System", there is only ONE. I swear the same guy is still there after all these years. If you like White Castle, you'll love these little onion steam cooked sliders. If you're looking for a clean place for healthful food, stay away. If you want a cheap tasty burger, order two of the cheese burgers and one of the Giant Burger specials. You'll enjoy that burger taste for hours.

The Giant System is AMAZING! This old school burger joint is well known and loved among the people of Dearborn Heights, "South End" neighborhood. It features "slyder" style mini-hamburgers cooked over a bed of steamed onions. The restaurant never closes, and is a very popular spot after 2am when the local bars close.

14. I was in Dublin Sunday. Our cabbie was telling us about his family.
His son was to get married today.

One of our party joked that they were fortuitous to have chosen the same day as the Royals.

He laughed and said that it was the other way around, the Royals chose the same day as his son.

No love lost there.

(BTW it was the 95th anniversary of the Easter Rising. There was a military ceremony outside the General Post Office, Machine guns and all.)
