I just got in the mail today an acceptance letter and access card from The Chronic Disease Fund Assistance Program!!! They will fund my treatments for macular degeneration for the entire calendar year 2011!!! :) All I'm responsible for is my $30 office visit co pay :)

I think my Mom is getting the same in one eye. She says one eye has 'wet' MD and the other has 'dry' MD. One of the eyes can be helped by the injection but the other can't - I don't remember which is which.

I have both wet and dry form macular degeneration and the wet form is very expensive to treat. Fortunately I have insurance (though they initially wanted to deny coverage, calling my mac degen. a pre-existing condition). For a person to find out they have this disease is devastating enough, denying treatment for lack of funds is inhuman. So very glad that you found assistance.

I got so excited when I read your post, thinking this could be the answer to my prayers. So I checked out their website:

"We award financial assistance on a calendar year basis to patients that have insurance and meet our income qualification guidelines."

What the fuck is that all about -- yet more discrimination against people who can't afford insurance and who need this kind of subsidy assistance the most.

153. CatWoman, you wouldn't be a veteran of the armed forces, would you?

I ask because no place has a blind/low vision program like the VA. The VA is the model for what should be happening with blind and low vision in this country. There are a lot of "prosthetics" available to someone with macular, but they're not cheap. They include desktop and hand held CCTV's (Closed Circuit TV's which are essentially electronic magnifiers that help you using your peripheral vision and even OCR machines (optical character recognition). You put a document down, the machine takes a picture of it and reads it to you. However, to the non-vet these are expensive, unless your state will pick up the cost to keep you working. PM me if you're a vet and I can direct you to where you need to go. Any vet out there with Macular Degeneration or any other sight related condition should check with the VA for vision aids. If you haven't tried, you have no idea what they will provide. It's amazing and helps you cope. Some states will also help, but it depends where you're at.

yes, I am a veteran and just made an appt with the VA. I've finally decided to have my gall bladder removed, and want to get it done thru them. My appt. isn't until July, unfortunately, but I will also check out the vision assistance services while I'm at it.

The doctor who was treating me for my gall stones moved away to take over his father's practice. It's just as well because I'm over all these doctor bills and I might as well put my disabled vet benefits to good use.
