Clearwater driver says he wanted to kill terrorist

CLEARWATER — Authorities say a man accused of injuring a city worker in a hit-and-run crash Thursday told investigators he thought the worker was a terrorist, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, and wanted to kill him.

Gerald Christopher Prebe, 35, of 1512 Tilley Ave. was originally charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle. Police raised that to attempted murder after interviewing Prebe.

Police are still investigating to determine if they will charge him with a hate crime, said Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts.

4. Not always so clear.

First off he is and has never been a racist. I have known the alleged assailant since 9th grade, and he was nothing more than an eccentric graphic artist that was very talented. And he would always be the first to try to make people smile. Unfortunately I have not been close to him for several years, except for brief excerpts on FB, and I believe he may have developed some mental illness of some sort. I feel so sad for the guy who got hit and for my friend. He has a wife and two kids, and he ruined all their lives in a split second, very sad. This whole situation is just bad, but we all need to understand that all situations, no matter how outlandish or horrible they are, may not always be so clear cut. Everyone one has a back ground and a story. What my friend did was unacceptable. But he is not a monster nor a racists nor the devil.
