ATTN. News Media Important Story

It was called the battle of Yorktown and after that we got rid of this royal born
king and queen horsecrap.

It was all over more than 200 years ago. BTW there is no such thing as royalty
along with flying carpets, leprechauns, fire breathing dragons, and centaurs.

1. Technically until the Treaty of Paris-1783 was signed and ratified
Everyone who lived in the colonies was still a British subject. The Founders may have been in open rebellion against the crown but had they lost, there would have been a bunch of hangings and England would have retaken control of everything.

2. ATTN: History lesson:
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 08:47 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
The Revolutionary War came about because the British Parliament refused to provide adequate representation to the colonies -- the monarch, George III, was pretty much a powerless figurehead even then. And some revolutionaries still had monarchist tendencies: Supposedly there were some who wanted George Washington to be King rather than President; and while the Constitution was being drafted Alexander Hamilton argued in favor of creating an elected monarchy.

Interestingly, the socialist democracies of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands are also monarchies. They have kings and queens and universal health care.

I'm not arguing in favor of monarchy - just pointing out that sneering at the wedding of a powerless hereditary monarch is kind of ridiculous. The British have a long tradition of ceremony involving "royal" events, and I see no reason to be disrespectful of that tradition.

I would also note that in the U.S. we fawn over our own hereditary "monarchs": I offer as Exhibit A the Kennedy family -- not to mention countless useless celebrities who are famous only for being famous.
