"Let's find out what everybody is doing – and stop them doing it" – A P Herbert

Stoners are helping destroy the planet. Not by excessive snacking, but thanks to the high-energy demands of indoor marijuana cultivation. So says a US Government policy analyst with a Puritanical streak and an EYE for a SHOUTY HEADLINE.

Evan Mills, who works at Lawrence Livermore Labs but conducted the study in his own time, estimates that indoor pot growing accounts for 1 per cent of energy usage in the United States, with each spliff representing two pounds of CO2 emission. Heavy.

About 32 per cent of energy in the cultivation process is used by lighting equipment, including motorised lamp rails; 26 per cent by ventilation systems and dehumidifiers; 18 per cent by air conditioning; and the rest... uh, we can't remember. ..."

Just more reasons why smoking pot is bad.

It actually tastes really good most times when you grow your own, and outdoor growing is the easiest by far except for helicopter patrols by the cops. You have lots of great outdoor growers all across canada. quebec gold is a great variety grown mostly out in the woods.

63. A lie, or the Dunning-Kruger effect
You can't possibly know enough about drugs to make claims about the 'gateway drug' hypothesis WITHOUT knowing that it has been disproven, generation after generation, through the entire twentieth century. Any more than you can KNOW that the earth is really flat.

You can BELIEVE that the earth is flat, but there's no way to gather enough information to make a reasonable conclusion about the shape of the earth without coming to the same conclusion that everyone else has, which that it's a slightly irregular oblate spheroid, and it is NOT flat.

Likewise with the 'gateway drug' hypothesis. You can believe it in the face of the facts, but you can't find facts to support it in this universe.

84. There it is
If it isn't illegal, there wouldn't be illegal channels.

That is besides the point, people who are curious about intoxication will test out multiple substances and that includes cannabis as well as tobacco and alcohol. People who use cocaine will likely use other substances such as tobacco and alcohol. They may have started with cannabis but I'm willing to bet just as many if not more started with alcohol.

There is nothing with cannabis that would make someone desire other drugs, especially powerful stimulants.

It was the trendy shit like x and coke in high school, along with lots and lots of alcohol (late 80's for context). I didn't settle down to just pot until much, much later. Most of my friends are the same way, fwiw. I think there are a lot of people who choose the harder stuff for the simple reason that you can still pass a drug test. Pot stays with you for weeks.

102. I think there it is a lot of truth to what you say
I was where there were random drug tests and very few smoked cannabis compared to those that used hard drugs for precisely the reason it stays in your system. Most drank heavily.

I also agree about settling with pot. A few friends who used to use a lot of different stuff now just use cannabis and alcohol these days. I personally only drink to watch a game at a sports bar and that is just 1 or 2 beers.

Another non sequitur from you. Are you now trying to claim that because pot is illegal, it leads to harder illegal drugs, so the solution is to keep it illegal? That's twice now, in this thread alone. Let me break this down for you. The statement "A therefore B, so to remove B, keep A" makes no logical sense whatsoever.

So, let me see if I've got this straight. Because pot is illegal, it leads its users to try other illegal drugs. So pot must never be legal so that people never are led to these illegal drugs by using a legal drug? My god, the contortions your brain cell must go through to believe this crap.

103. Part of the reason for that....
... is the entire "Drugs are bad, m'kay?" philosophy. Take the movie "Reefer Madness", for example. Yeah, it's old. But it's a gross exaggeration of the effects of marijuana. While most things we teach children nowadays are not that extreme in their exaggeration, we teach that marijuana is just as bad as cocaine and "harder drugs" by lumping them into the same category.

Then kids go out and meet a stoner, and see that the stoner isn't killing anyone. Isn't robbing stores to pay for their habit. Generally isn't getting behind the wheel high. They might try it themselves, and see that the delivery system isn't much different from cigarettes.... they aren't having to shoot up to get high. That the effects are like drinking a beer. And beer's legal, right?

Then they wonder... is cocaine really as bad as they said it was? After all, they exaggerated about marijuana, right?

The only way marijuana is more of a gateway drug than alcohol or tobacco are is that it's illegal. It does make it harder for a person to respect the law when they see a substance is fairly innocuous but illegal, but yet there are mind-altering substances that kill many more people each year and are still legal. It lessens the deterrent value of making harder drugs illegal.

--------

I grew up with a very different education because my father was addicted to crystal methamphetamine. He caught HIV from sharing needles he used to shoot it in 1992 when I was 12, and died in 2009. (They divorced when I was three.)

I was taught by my mother from an early age that cigarettes were not going to kill you in the short-term but bad in the long-term because they caused cancer and COPD, but since they were very addictive both physically and psychologically that it was best never to start. I was taught that alcohol was okay in moderation, but that you needed to look very closely at why you decided to drink before indulging.... that drinking to escape a problem was bad even if you only had one drink. That some people were able to drink in moderation and not have a problem with it, but that some people couldn't.

Mom went further than that though, and taught about *all* of the mind-altering substances she could think of. That pot was like alcohol except that it wasn't good for your lungs to smoke anything, and there was an additional burden of it being illegal. That pills prescribed by a doctor, when taken as prescribed and for the reasons they were prescribed, are generally not psychologically addictive but if you start self-medicating that you can get psychologically addicted, and that many cause physical dependence even taking them as prescribed. That psychedelics were generally not addictive and some people had fun with them, but were not universally fun and that a bad trip can be psychologically damaging... and that if I ever wanted to try them, that it was *essential* that I be with people I trusted. And that white powders were universally bad, addictive both physically and psychologically, and had horrific nasty health effects. Dad being diagnosed and allowed back into my life was a very big teacher for me about health effects.

Starting when I was 13, at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and New Years Eve, I was allowed a glass of wine under parental supervision so I would know what it tasted like and know what a small buzz felt like. It was okay but I really wasn't that fond of it. I was told that if I ever wanted to drink more to come to one of my parents. I was also told that if I ever wanted to try pot, to come to them. And when I hadn't yet tried it before I went to college, my father (with my mother's knowledge and consent) got some very high-quality pot and had me smoke a little with him... so I'd know what it felt like and what "good pot" actually was so if I ever did want to buy some I wouldn't get ripped off. I wasn't that fond of pot, either.

And as I grew up and then was a grown-up and saw other people using substances, I NEVER had the thought "Wow, my parents lied to me.... maybe they lied about white powders too?"

Because alcohol is legal and pot is illegal, pot is more likely to be a gateway to other illegal drugs.

Since pot is a gateway drug, it should be illegal.

The majority of the weed consumed in the usa is outdoor grown, yes indoor grown has become more available in the past 20 years but imported weed is all outdoor except for a tiny bit of indoor canadian that makes it into the usa, plus the good ole boys grow a shitload of weed outside all across dixie and the hills from maine down to alabama. even in california outdoor grown is huge. the weed i grow to smoke is outdoor and the hash i buy comes from outdoor grown weed in mazar i sharif, afghanistan (at least that is what the gold stamp says)

If it were legal most people who had a garden and smoked would grow their own outside. In a free market indoor grown would just be a niche market in a country like the usa with so many different climate zones in which so many different tasting varieties of weed could be grown outdoor would likely be the vast majority of the market were weed legalized.

Although, "Canadian-somewhat-social-liberal-except-all-marijuana-and-all-eeeevil-stoners-who-partake-despite-my-sensibilities" lacks the same ring to it.

Y'know, there are plenty of people out there who don't partake and yet do not criticize. And we 'stoners' are fine with that, more for us and all that. That's what REAL liberality is.

PS: My pot comes from small scale local growers in the US. Nobody died for my weed. And I have been a responsible user for over twenty years, preferring pot to anti-depressants. Sorry to bum your trip or anything, bubbalah. :eyeroll:

that continuing to throw people in prison for smoking a relatively harmless plant, and spending upwards of $40 Billion a year to "fight" it, makes anything resembling coherent sense.

In other words, an assertion so bald-fucking-faced ridiculous and idiotic that most people would have to assume it's being made facetiously.

excess energy, resources and human power that could be much better served elsewhere.

If it weren't for the asinine, shortsighted policies criminalizing the American People, while also shortchanging logical sustainable energy policies, ie: solar, wind, wave and geothermal, it wouldn't be an issue.

If growing or smoking pot is bad, the insane laws against it are atrocious, but you already know this.

170. If you want the low down why he is obsessed, here it is..
Once a while back a beautiful Russian lady was visiting Canada and fell madly in love with this liberal Canadian. They made beautiful love together, watched sunsets, played tennis, it was a perfect romance.

Then one night, the beautiful Russian woman went out on the back deck by herself. The liberal Canadian woke up to see her missing from bed, and went to look around. What he found was horrific, she was outside smoking a joint!

A tense fight and argument broke out, and even though he was madly in love, he couldn't let that devil weed be anywhere in his presence. So an ultimatum was put down, either the pot or me...and she chose the pot.

The rest is history

on several of your threads to counter your claim that "it causes health issues" and you've never countered even once. It's like you've got your fingers in your ears and are singing "la-la-la-la-la-la . . ."

Your agenda is clear -- you've got some sort of jihad against pot. That's your privilege I suppose but posting obscure articles and claiming it as absolute scientific fact is disingenuous and I'm embarrassed for you.

Are you beginning to see the first flaw in your argument yet?

The website has actual extensive scientific studies -- all well documented. Argue that you don't like marijuana and think everyone on the planet should be prohibited from using it, fine. But don't do it by posting some obscure article, with no science behind it, and then refuse to even look at scientific evidence that counters that marijuana has been proven medical benefits.

It is patently absurd to claim that marijuana is itself bad because its legal status forces people to use illegal means to obtain it. Laws are not made just for the sake of making laws. This is exactly why prohibition didn't work - people don't want to give up their substance of choice, and if you are not affected by their using it, then you have no business in telling them to stop, or making it illegal for them to use it.

Day by day it's more impossible to cope
I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope
Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous
Every sunday morning I'm in service
Playing for forgiveness
And trying to find an exit out of the business
I know the lord is looking at me
But yet and still it's hard for me to feel happy
I often drift while I drive
Havin fatal thoughts of suicide
Bang and get it over with
And then I'm worry-free, but that's bullshit
I got a little boy to look after
And if I died then my child would be a bastard
I had a woman down with me
But to me it seemed like she was down to get me
She helped me out in this shit
But to me she was just another bitch
Now she's back with her mother
Now I'm realizing that I love her
Now I'm feeling lonely
My mind is playing tricks on me

That this is another reason to legalize it everywhere, having to hide it, is what's jacking the energy need.
If you actually think a naturally occuring plant can be stopped, you need to pull your head out of the sand once in a while.
I can't get actual junk weeds from growing in my back yard, and I live in the desert. Albeit the chemicals available work well.
I do see the evil that keeping it illegal has provided, and that's enough for me, let them toke, much better than a bunch of drunk drivers and all the
slow liver poisoning that alcohol provides...

202. Then explain your logic.
You say that pot destroys the environment BECAUSE it's illegal. When you're informed that making it legal would negate this, you say that we just shouldn't make it legal, COMPLETELY NEGATING WHAT YOU'VE BEEN TRYING TO SAY. What is your logic for this?

Then you say that pot is a gateway drug BECAUSE it's illegal and then say it shouldn't be legalized. What is your logic for that?

So basically, the entire content of your post is "POT IS BAD BECAUSE I SAY SO!"

Are you going to explain any of this? You've been asked to numerous times. Of course not, but you're a fucking imbecile and a tool. Really man, my 4 year old daughter has a far greater grasp on logic than you do. You really shouldn't be allowed out of your house for fear of hurting yourself or others.
