1. Gosh, children are so resilient. And they have a capacity to make the best of a miserable thing.
There is so much adults can learn from them.

3. Lots of Japanese people wear them, and did even before
Fukushima. Now, they have more reason, but they've done it for years. It's a crowded country, and the masks have been used to protect against things like colds and flu for a long time.

5. Some people use it for the sprngtime allergies.
My wife's mother (from Japan) wore one while recovering from a cold because it would be impolite to spread whatever bug she had.

I still can't get used to the masks. Japan is an extremely fashion conscious country, but the masks are decidedly unfashionable!
