Hate crime because they are gay?

Yeah I think so.
Locally, an openly gay pastor says it's a hate crime that someone has stolen the Christian pride flag and damaged the flag pole in front of his church. Six times in one year, someone has stolen the flag. Six times. The newspaper article explains it better than I can, but it is an outrage and should not happen in a civilized society.
Honesty compels me to say that I have met this guy, although I don't know him well. He is a nice guy. He has been very active on the local political scene.

I also wish to apologize for this somewhat disjointed post. I'm really tired after working all day.
