Dubuque, Iowa NAACP chapter may be closed
Edited on Sat Apr-30-11 06:27 PM by 47of74
Unfortunately, we may be losing our local NAACP chapter because of low membership.

For 23 years, the Dubuque Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has promoted racial harmony and social justice through educational programs, thought-provoking speakers and an annual tribute to Martin Luther King.

But unless the local group adds more members to its roster, it will be shut down by the national organization. Remaining members are conducting a frantic membership drive to add, not only registered names to its list of members, but people who will bring some time and energy to the group’s efforts.

I thought for sure there would be all sorts of nastiness in the comments section, but so far there's only one racist comment. Since it may be removed before too long, here's that one such comment;

ofkors anyone can be a member, as long as u swear to promote colored peoples' issues more than any noncolored persons' issues and concerns.....its a discriminatory organization aimed at taking away from noncolored and giving to colored, sort of like what obama tries to do

1. I remember several years ago, the hoodies tried to get a foothold
up there. By hoodies, I mean the kkk. They were made to feel unwelcome and they finally moved on. In fact, I remember going to Janesville, WI around that time and wandering around downtown where I encountered a klan rally. I simply walked away and went to a local establishment to drink beer. They didn't last long up there either.

2. Ehm, I'm sorry to hear this.....however, it's perhaps not as terrible sounding
as it seems? :shrug:

I don't live in Dubuque. I have long-time family ties there. One of my children graduated just a year ago from one of the town's three colleges.

1) There aren't many minorities in Dubuque...for whatever reason, there just aren't.

2) With three (3) colleges in the town, it's pretty darn progressive

I don't understand why the NAACP chapter is 'closing down' here other than perhaps to say that it's 'not needed'. Better to spend NAACP resources elsewhere?

:shrug:

3. Sorry to hear that
I am treasurer of our local NAACP. I continue to support the NAACP for historical reasons, but more importantly, they are sometimes the only org to stand up to the nastiness of the teaparty, the Maine Governor, the Georgia Dept of Corrections who came down heavy on organizers of a non-violent prison strike...sometimes they stand with the ACLU, the Black Agenda. Here in southern NM, we have an annual Juneteenth day and have had ongoing talks (every other month)/forum on racism in America...we've had hispanics, Mescalero Apaches attend. I'd love to see some Dubuque Dems become NAACP members.

From someone who got a bad case of FOX News poisoning. Here it is because it'll be going bye-bye too before too long;
