Scott Walker's food stamp plan allows a for profit corporation decide who gets food and who doesn’t
Governor Scott Walker is creating a road to fascism in a hurry in Wisconsin. Not only does his “budget repair bill” hand over utilities to private industry but now this tea party conservative wants to privatize food stamp allocations.

This plan would allow a for profit corporation to decide who gets food and who doesn’t. On top of this 20 million dollars will be taken away from Wisconsin in Federal aid for help.

Walker’s proposed 2011-’13 budget would take this work from the remaining counties and centralize it with the state by using a private contractor to do much of the work. The Walker administration estimates that the proposal would save $48 million per year and eliminate 270 positions.

If this corporation makes a mistake, who does a person call? When a service is privatized that corporation is ONLY answerable to shareholders and depending on the contract the state signs, the corporation may have that job for 3, 5, or even 10 years before anything can be rectified.

1. Biased in the wrong direction
A food program needs to err on the side of giving the needy food, at the cost of occasionally giving the too much to the occasional cheater, who will be detected through other means. There is no way to bias a corporation in this direction, whereas a nonprofit tends to allow people's compassion to bias it in the proper direction, and if a counterforce is needed, it comes from the financial side of the nonprofit, which is what is supposed to happen.

It's not just IF they make a mistake,
it's WHEN they make a mistake,
and when they make SYSTEMATIC mistakes, all biased in their own favor

It's about as likely to work as teaching a mountain lion to tickle a rabbit's belly.

12. Good observations. When said corporation makes a mistake and
denies food assistance to someone who truly deserves it, will the corporation be legally liable for the mistake? I'd love to be the Legal Aid attorney bringing that case!

3. Get ready for a lot of this.
Eliminate 270 positions. They do not care about job losses.

In many states, especially GOP run states, they are laying
off workers as fast as the sluggish private sector creates
a few jobs.

They hammer Obama about jobs??? When is someone going
to say to Boehner--your Governor is laying off workers
as fast as the Private Sector tries to create some jobs.

4. He's forgetting that the state is also an employer
We SHOULD be employing as many folks as possible, not having the money go to for-profit corps.

It doesn't matter if it's teachers, road crews, DNR people, DOT counter staff...they should be state workers.

Why not privatize the State Patrol? Why not firefighters? Hey, how about outsourcing to Law Enforcement, Inc.? No one thinks that's a good idea, but it seems to be fair game for just about every other sector.

Fucking looters!

9. That's the problem. If the state employs someone, it pays them a living wage, pension and health ins
If they outsource to a private company, that company can pay slave wages, give no benefits and pocket the difference, while demanding an increase every year in some contracts. The state then can't say no.

Plus, once something's privatized, any attempts to bring it back to the government sparks cries of "big government" and "the dems are destroying jobs!"

5. Not only will they determine who gets them
they will then pick only specific places where they can get their food. The food will be poor in quality and often just not edible.

This is dangerous. Walker is gone in 2012...

6. Private utilities is bad for the people
The people will realize this if they are privatized but by then it will be too late. Nebraska has public utilities and we have some of the lowest rates and most depandable services. Not even partisan republicans suggest doing away with it. I hope Wisconsin does not do this.
