soulmates

talk to her. her spirit will hear you. and once she gets her bearings on the other side she'll be with you whenever you need her or want her. you were a priority to her in this lifetime, there is no reason to think you will not continue to be a priority to her. 42 years. it doesn't stop or end here. our spirits don't die, energy doesn't die and that love you have for each other will go on and on. it will be the thread that keeps you connected.

i'm sorry both of you are going through this. too sudden. too unexpected.
let her know it's okay, that everything is going to be okay, and you'll find each other again.
because you will.

halloween "decorating"

i loved decorating for halloween. i'd start fixing the yard on the first of october. there was a lot to it and it took about a week to get it completed with all the little finishing touches. and if i found something cool in a store i'd add it to the displays. i some of those blow molds of pumpkins and witches, big bubbling cauldrons, fog machines, sound effects, black picket fencing, spot lights and strings of halloween lights along the fences and entangled in bushes, and a wonderful cemetery with towering shepherd hooks marking the entrance. the yard was spooky and enchanting. i never put out anything that was considered gore.

some parents told me their kids loved walking to school and looking for something new in the yard or cemetery that i added.

i was the cool halloween house in the neighborhood. people would drive to my house to trick or treat and see the displays. the neighbor kids had dinner in the cemetery (their parents would come over, bring pot luck dishes in my dining room, the kids would go outside and eat in the cemetery and the adults would hang out for awhile in the house)

i miss those days a lot. i had to sell my house (after having grown up there and having been there for a million years). i sold or gave away nearly all those decorations; kept a few but don't put them out. i'm in a condo so i could only put them on the patio and it's enclosed by bushes so no one would see them anyway. and there hasn't been a single trick or treater here since i moved in.

talk about an end to an era. it was a fucking abrupt end.

anyway, i was just going to post this meme b/c i thought it was funny. i really had no intention of launching into all this.

before my parents bought a house my mom talked to a couple people

who worked in the village office, inquiring about a public swimming pool.

they assured her the village was working to get one and that the town should have one in a few years.

we moved into that town when i was seven years old.
i stayed there and raised my kid there.
fifty years passed by before i moved out. still no public pool!

and it's been a number of years since. still no public pool.

i remember they put it up for a vote about 20 years ago. a group of seniors started a campaign that was directed to other seniors-- it will raise your taxes!

well, since it was a majority of seniors who went out and voted -- guess what? NO POOL!

the park district had already bought and cleared land; they already had the money to build it. the pool was going to have a lot of great stuff--including (my favorite) a lazy river!

so instead they just built a huge rec center with a lot of workout equipment & a track, a couple room rentals. no indoor pool.

taxes still went up.

"DEMOCRATS: KICK TRUMP WHILE HE'S DOWN - 6.12.23"

(just click play)

A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT:

Donald Trump has put the lives of tens of thousands of American service men and women at risk – all around the world – by stealing the documents. Donald Trump doesn’t give a damn if American troops live or die. Donald Trump HATES THE TROOPS. And why aren’t we hearing that? Bill Barr, The National Review, Governor Sununu, and The National Review blistered Trump. Scott Jennings, the rabid CNN conservative? Jennings hit a point that in normal times would have been enough for the Republicans to have already thrown Trump overboard, for all time? “If you had a son or a daughter who was serving…in a hostile place and you thought maybe their information was in a document that could have been picked off the friggin floor, do you know how this could impact a military family? The thing is when you’re commander in chief, you have this responsibility to the military and the people who serve. It’s sort of offensive to me actually that we would be so cavalier with the information that could possibly put our people in jeopardy.”

And if there is anything more shocking than the number of anti-Trump statements ESPECIALLY from lawyers and from HIS lawyers – it is the fact that in normal times the Democrats would have taken the essence of Scott Jennings’ point: TRUMP PUT THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN SERVICE MEN AT RISK, and they would have hung that fact around the necks of not just Trump and everybody close to him, but around the necks of EVERY Republican who didn’t condemn him and the Democrats would be screaming “Why does Donald Trump hate the troops?” and “Why does Ron DeSantis hate the troops?” and “Why does Lindsey Graham hate the troops?” and if the POINT ITSELF wasn’t decisive enough, the Democrats could follow it up with the new CBS News poll that asks is there a national security risk if Trump kept nuclear and military documents and the answer was YES, Trump put the National Security at Risk, YES… from 38 percent OF REPUBLICANS.

Why in the chorus of sheep bleating about Trump’s rights and Hillary Clinton this and weaponization that, are virtually ALL the dissenting voices… Republicans? Where are the Democrats? Where are the Democrats talking about the grave risk Trump was and is to National Security? Where are the Democrats demanding that he will be president again only over their dead bodies? Where are the Democrats saying no matter how this trial turns out, Trump definitely put American troops at risk for the sake of his ego, and he may have gotten American troops KILLED, and he may STILL get American troops KILLED? Where is the outrage?

Axios reports the Democratic National Committee asked Democrats in the Committee to no-comment the indictment. The PRESIDENT is no-commenting the indictment. The entire hierarchy of the Democratic Party is staying off-stage because of some kind of nonsensical, 1975-notion that to speak out against Trump’s criminality and treachery and treason is to somehow grasp a third rail, that because if you speak up for truth and honesty and Americanism and you are a politician you have somehow POLITICIZED truth and honesty and Americanism. Mr. President, House Democrats, Senate Democrats, we elected you to stand up for the rule of law, against Trump. Proclaim it and exult in it. Your silence will be mistaken for weakness. Kick him when he's down - and sing the anthem while you do it.

senate hearing on AI (OpenAI CEO Testifies on Artificial Intelligence)

OpenAI CEO Testifies on Artificial Intelligence
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose company created the ChatGPT and DALL-E text and image generation tools, was one of three artificial intelligence experts who testified on oversight of the swiftly developing technology at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing. They were questioned about the state of AI development and some of the concerns its usage had, especially regarding the job market and the spread of election disinformation. Afterward, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the subcommittee’s chair, talked to reporters about potential steps to regulate AI at the federal level. close

reveal: the covid tracking project in 3 parts -- recommended

my daughter was telling me she heard part two on the radio recently and was filling me in a bit. she didn't know the name of the show, the series, etc. she thought it was from npr, she told me how the cdc had insisted this woman get a form notarized before she was allowed access to a database, etc and in my daughter's take, how the cdc was fucking this up from the get-go.

i managed to find it just by googling and including the word "notarized" in the search.

i'm listening to the second part now, and i'll go back and listen to parts 1 and 3 later.

i'm having a bit of an "oh my god" reaction to this; at 29 minutes in i put my head in my hands and thought i was going to start crying. then i decided to turn it off for a few minutes and post this.

it is definitely worth a listen

The COVID Tracking Project Part 1
In February 2020, reporters Rob Meyer and Alexis Madrigal from The Atlantic were trying to find solid data about the rising pandemic. They published a story that revealed a scary truth: The U.S. didn’t know where COVID-19 was spreading because few tests were available. The CDC also didn’t have public data to tell citizens or federal agencies how many people were infected or where the outbreaks were happening.

The COVID Tracking Project Part 2
In March 2020, White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx had a daunting task for technologist Amy Gleason, a new member of her data team. Her job was to figure out where people were testing positive for COVID-19 across the country, how many were in hospitals and how many had died from the disease. Gleason was shocked to find that data from the CDC wasn’t reflecting the immediate impact of the coronavirus.

The COVID Tracking Project Part 3
The COVID Tracking Project closes with a look at racial disparities in deaths from the disease and what the CDC has learned. Jessica Malaty Rivera talks with the current CDC director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, to try to understand what went wrong in the agency’s response to the pandemic – and ask whether it’s prepared for the next one.
