They glossed over his infidelities and stressed that he seemed to be a good father. They were impressed by his respectful sons and admired the success of his daughters.
...
When you grow up in Nebraska, you are apparently expected to bleat about family values and the corruption of the elites, to be surebut, socioeconomically speaking, it is apparently all a ruse meant for the children and whatever gullible reporters wander through town. In reality, when it comes to the churches and the voting booths, you can be as adulterous as you want, cheat your neighbor eagerly and gleefully, lie to everyone about everything andif you are in the right tribe, and only if you are in the right tribeit is expected.
...
I believe I have pointed out multiple times that in my own experiences, for example, if any business owner mentions Jesus within the first 10 minutes of meeting you you can be absolutely, 100 percent assured they are out to scam you, good and hard, which is an interesting metric of what so-called Christianity has been reduced to in many subsets of the American psyche.
...
Baffling as it may be to elites, Mr. Trump embodies a real if imperfect model of family values. People familiar with the purple family model tend to view his alienation from his childrens mother as normal and his closeness to his children as exceptional and admirable. I saw this among my acquaintances in Nebraska. Even those from red families were more likely than my acquaintances in New York to know someone who has had a child out of wedlock or is subject to a restraining order.
...
Plainly put: These are the hallmarks of terrible human beings. People who you would not trust with your children. People you would go out of your way to avoid, if you did care about honesty or family values. These are the people who press their mistresses for abortions but who also are not vexed by abortion-providing doctors being murdered in their Kansas churches; they are confederate flag-wavers in Union states, miffed that new civil rights laws a half century ago slighted their own neer-do-well families in some never-quite-describable way; these are people who are so obsessed with the thought that someone better is looking down on them that they are willing to punch whatever kittens need punching in order to prove they're at least better at kitten-punching than the rest of you. The opioid epidemic is centered in Trump-supporting counties. The demand that brown-looking children be placed in detention camps for fear that a terrified 8-year-old might be a hardened gang leader is a phenomenon of Trump-Supporting counties. The insistence that Treason Might Be Good Now is peddled by Fox News celebrities to die-hard Trump supporters who will repeat and retweet it willing and eagerly; it was Trump supporters, Jesus-punchers every one, who gave Alabama crapsack Roy Moore their votes even after his exposure as a child molestercomplete with Bible citations from conservative pastors arguing that Roy Moore trolling the malls for a child bride was, in fact, in fine Old Testament tradition.
They don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
They didn't vote for him because of economic anxiety.
They didn't vote for him because Jesus.
They didn't vote for him because they believed his lies.
They know who Trump is. They know that he's a horrible person, that he's the epicenter of a dysfunctional family of grifters, that he lies and fondles and cheats and steals.
And that's why they like him. Because all these awful, awful things make him real and relatable. He's one of them and they are one of him. Trump is certainly more relatable than that horrible Hillary Clinton with her education and her career and her happy little family.
They voted for him because they recognized that he's not one of the perfect elite.
They voted for him because they recognized that he's just a short-fingered vulgarian.

(7,220 posts)Because we DO look down on them. They don't care if the politicians they support are corrupt because those politicians will screw us, the Libruls, and then we'll ALL be screwed.
They don't care that the water will be polluted, or the air, or our food... these are the poorest, the least educated and the most addicted people in America... what do THEY care about those things? But they know that WE care about them... and they hate us for having more than them. And they want to take it away from us. So then they won't feel "less than".
And Trump will help them achieve that goal. That's why they don't care what he does. As long as he burns it all down, takes away the things we hold dear, they will support him.

NO NO NO NO. NO.
Whats different between New York and Nebraska?
In a word, PROPAGANDA.
Nebraskans listen to Fox and Limbaugh. New Yorkers do not.
THAT is the difference that drives the hate and gives Nebraskans excuses for the president and his hate.
Until the nation acknowledges its right wing propaganda problem we will never fix the country.

(6,232 posts)Go back to the 70s when the repubs looked out over the land at protesting Hippies. They said this will not stand. Along came "Law & Order" Nixon. Along came the Moral Majority/Religious Right who sold their souls/votes to the repubs for their social issues. The propagandizing and brain washing started then with talk radio and then Fox Lies. I watched in horror as the repubs won election after election. The country moved right and I felt totally unconnected. This is when the Dems had to do what they could to survive. I know a lot of folks here attack the "Corp Dems", but that is how the Dems survived. Attack me all you want, but that is what happened. So many left leaners bought the attacks on Hillary. Sorry, but I consider them sucked in fools and partly responsible for trump. How regretters who voted for trump, 3rd party or not at all can sleep at night, is truly a mystery.
FakeNoose
(32,823 posts)One of the first things that Reagan did as POTUS, was to strike down the FCC fairness doctrine. The fairness doctrine kept the media honest because news outlets (mainly TV news at the time) had to offer "equal time" to every opponent to present their views. If the Republicans got 1/2 hour then the Democrats got the same. That's how it worked. Until suddenly it didn't, and it made hate radio possible, Fox News became possible and all the other nonsense that has happened since then.
Nixon did his best to twist the system but he failed because it was still stacked for the Constitution in the days before Reagan. When we rebuild this country after the GOP goes down the shithole, the first thing we need to do is reinstate the FCC fairness doctrine. There are so many things on the list, but that should be near the top. Frankly I was disappointed that Obama didn't do it while he was in office.

(3,077 posts)... that allowing, if not encouraging, political action committees is what opened the door for the total corporate buyout of the American political process.
"1971
Congress passes major overhauls to the patchwork of regulations governing campaign finance. The Federal Election Campaign Act established comprehensive rules for political parties, campaign committees of politicians and political action committees. The Federal Election Campaign Act set rules for raising money, and limited the amount that donors could give to campaigns as well as how much candidates themselves and their families could subsidize their races. The act required campaigns, parties and PACs to disclose their donors and their spending. One major weakness was the lack of a centralized agency to handle disclosure and enforcement The Revenue Act enabled taxpayers to voluntarily set aside $1 ($2 for married couples) on their federal tax returns for the Presidential Election Campaign Fund. The amounts were raised in 1993 to $3 and $6 respectively."

I always avoid businesses that have overt religious symbols in their ads or stores. If there's a "Jesus fish" in the ad or on the door, I know they are crooked.
But the core of it is a disturbing truth that my husband and I realized soon after the election. People who could vote for him are simply not good people, even if the put forth that face to the world, it is just a mask to hide the rot underneath. We've distanced ourselves from these people, though many are relatives.

Family is considered so important to some, but frankly, as you have discovered (and I have as well) blood family is sometimes not as welcoming or nourishing to our souls as are the ones we choose, by friendship or marriage. I'm glad you found the right family. I hope that my kids find my husband and I to be the family they'd choose.
Amazing how some people actually appear to follow what their religion says and others just use it as a weapon, a bludgeon to put others down.

The most ardent supporters are hideous people and now don't seem to care who knows it. He's emboldened them to be complete assholes proudly and publicly. It's been bizarre to behold.
I'll grant a distinction between a low-information Trump voter (who may now regret their idiotic vote) and a Trump supporter. The former may be the result of propaganda. The latter gleefully embraces every shitty thing he does as not only acceptable, but admirable.

The insurance company gave the harbor masters about 40k in compensation to make repairs on the boat.
They did not do any of the work, dragged it out for over a year to do the repairs, charged the insurance company for work they claimed to do but did not.
In the end my in-laws got nothing fixed and had to do all the work themselves.
The owners had 'praise jesus" signs all over the boat yard, and bible quotes on over doorway in the harbor.
They walked off with the money, did no work and then declared bankruptcy and skedaddled.
My wifes folks got off easy, the owners had taken a bunch of others with the same scam and did not pay their workers on the way out.

(81,527 posts)Ive long suspected that what a lot of these jerks appreciated most about trump is how hes made it okay, even in some parts, respectable to be an absolute unapologetic asshole.
They dont like having to apologize because they DO NOT want to admit they did wrong. They dont want to admit that theyre racist and intolerant, and cruel and selfish and mean. Teacher (or mom or somebody) once told them no, or that was wrong, and they HATED it!!!!!! Didnt want to be told not to laugh at the impaired person at the store, or look down on the black kid in class, or the brown-skinned employees in the restaurant. To feel good about themselves, they had to knock somebody else down, or feel like those people were somehow less than themselves.
Guess nobody taught them, seriously, to share. To make room. To be tolerant and kind. Besides, to them, kindness is for sissies. Kindness is a weakness. And they didnt want to hear anything about how they were wrong or bad.
Maybe they thought all those lessons in Sunday School or catechism class didnt apply to them? Maybe nobody told them its not cool to hurt somebodys feelings and be mean and rude and loutish? Maybe nobody told them those shitty things you feel like saying? DONT. You DONT say that stuff out loud! Keep them to yourself! Nice people dont do that/talk like that!
Remember, the same bunch screams bloody murder over the very idea that someone should apologize - for anything! Remember the conniption fits they had with what they called President Obamas apology tour? When he would visit allies whod been insulted or upset by what the previous administration full of liars and war criminals had done. And hed extreme a hand to restore good relations and smooth ruffled feathers. And they HATED that, AND him for doing that.
As far as Ive concerned, these Deplorables and Dumbfuckistanis owe the entire planet and every life form on it an apology for foisting this monster on the rest of us.

(8,200 posts)I have listened to several of the right-wing radio extremists and their message appears to be dominated by the charge that Democrats are un-American as opposed to Republicans, with the same emphasis on the immorality of Democrats. Democrats are regarded as a real threat to those solid home-spun moral values of the real Americans. They are convinced that homosexuals are trying to recruit the children to this horrible life style and that people are not born with these so-called abnormal appetites but that they are converted by evil homosexuals. It goes along with the nonsense that sex education promotes promiscuity. The same with divorce and infidelity. The rates in these communities is the same as nationally along with abortion which they attributable to those damn immoral Liberals. It isn't a personal responsibility but the enticement of the Liberal Democrats that is at fault for ruining our pure, innocent and holy people. It is basically using the Democrats as the scapegoat for their own immorality. It is analogous to the blaming of those "wet backs" for the loss of jobs and their appetite for drugs as an escape for personal blame and responsibility.
