5. Annual June Tradition

Ever since Charlie, we've started a tradition of checking the hurricane supplies (batteries and flashlights mostly) the first of June and going into "prep mode" for the summer. Mostly that means eating down meats stored in the freezer and keeping a "minimum" amount on hand (about 2 weeks worth). After that it's mostly about waiting. Once a storm starts to form and move west, we might start freezing half gallon jugs of water and making sure the ice maker is full. Once they start predicting landfall, we'll start storing ice and making more. 2 days out we fill the gas tanks and get an extra 5 gallon can full.

It's the days/hours before that really suck. You basically have to close up the house and lock yourself in. It takes the better part of a day to accomplish. And then it's basically about sitting and waiting. We're far enough inland that we rarely are looking at much more than Cat 2, which is not bad enough for us to evacuate (no flooding risk). Of course, predominately you're waiting for the power to go out (and cable, and phone...). After that you're in battery mode for a few days. Of course, once the storm passes, ya have to unwind the house again, which takes again the better part of a day. Only now you get to do it without power.

Weather patterns and upper winds tend to make it hard for hurricanes to flow in from out there. Now August on the other hand...

Home Depot still saying they don't have the materials to do the installation. Unreal.

And I'm not sure how much more I can nag my husband about it.

HD keeps claiming the stuff they need for the installation isn't available yet. We're going to go through three more hurricane seasons before they get their shit together I guess.
