How Mueller Will Use Manaforts Trial to Prove Trump Corruption
The Paul Manafort trial is set to begin on July 25, and special counsel Robert Mueller has now shown us how he will use the trial not only to put Trumps former campaign manager in prison for the rest of his life but also to prove corruption in the Trump campaign.
The indictments against Manafort issued last year listed over 20 serious financial crimes, including bank fraud, and if Mueller can prove just one of these Manafort will do serious jail time.
In a court filing on Friday Mueller revealed how he is connecting the dots between Manaforts crimes and Donald Trumps corruption.
According to CNN:
Mueller is now saying explicitly that there is a connection between Manaforts fraud case and Donald Trump. The filing makes clear that Muellers team has evidence it will present in court to prove that there is a link between Manaforts crimes and Muellers investigation into the Trump campaign.
So even though the Manafort trial is not about Trumps collusion, it will be about Trumps corruption which Mueller can prove in court.
Mueller will show that a bank executive was given a position as a Trump campaign adviser in exchange for massive loans to Paul Manafort which should never have been made.
By showing that the loans were made in exchange for a Trump campaign position Mueller can go into court and provide evidence that Trump and his campaign team were involved in Manaforts fraudulent dealings.

Everybody knows that Donald Trump micromanaged his presidential campaign, so if his campaign chairman brought a banker into the campaign then Donald Trump knew about it. By proving Manafort committed crimes, Mueller will also prove that Donald Trump was (indirectly) involved in them.

(2,064 posts)There are people in prison who would kill Manafort just because he is a public figure and they want the attention that killing him would bring them.

Trump could pardon Manafort an hour from now and that would be the end of it.

(70,268 posts)he could still be subpoenaed, and at that point has no right to take the 5th.

(235 posts)Or he could show up and plead the 5th anyways. Why not? Or he could show up and pick his nose and answer every question asked of him with "DEEZ NUTZ!"
He's been pardoned. He's not going to be too worried over a contempt charge.

(54,770 posts)it means is some Aholes like Manafort go to jail. While I am sure that he did know, I don't think GOPers in the House or Senate are going to do anything about it. So trump remains in office.
Now, if the banker had gotten the position, with trumps' approval, we'd have something. But he didn't, and I still don't think Congress would do anything had he gotten a position, nor will his voters care.
That's the problem. Our best chance to neuter trump is to win big in November.

(32,823 posts)I'm hoping they'll show it on TV like the Watergate hearings, but I guess there's not much chance of that happening.
Anyway I think enough Trump voters will take a look at this and start wondering what the hell is going on. Maybe it will be enough to change their minds - a few of them anyway. In November we need big turnouts for the Dems, and maybe some of the Trump voters will decide to stay home.

(54,770 posts)to understand as regards trump. There is also a chance Manafort will get off or there will be nothing tying trump to Manafort's loans, resulting in trump yelling "No Collusion" going into November. Then, maybe prosecutors will nail his rear and begin implicating trump.
You'd think trump supporters would wonder how the Prez has managed to hire so many criminals and incompetents.

(5,815 posts)My understanding of trumps ability to pardon is that it is limited to Federal crimes only. Anything that violated state laws is something tRump is not authorized to pardon. So even if tRump says All is forgiven, he could still be prosecuted for state crimes and face a long period of incarceration. And during the federal trial (if it gets that far without tRump trying to short circuit that with a pardon) a lot of damning stuff will come out that shows what Manafort did but also exposes tRumps crimes. So even if there is effort by tRump to keep this out of court, the truth will be out to the public where people can make up their own minds.
As for making it all open and easy for anyone to watch the proceedings, maybe CSPAN will carry it. I remember watching the Watergate coverage on TV in the 70s. It was like watching an afternoon soap opera only it was REAL and nobody was an actor. I tuned in every day and wouldn't have missed it even though I didnt understand a lot about it. I learned as it went on and showed me how things work in a real courtroom. I just hope that our process has not been completely corrupted by tRump and his minions.
