A new report from Bloomberg claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a proposal to President Donald Trump to resolve the dispute over the annexed territory of Crimea and that Trump was receptive to it, so long as Putin kept it under wraps.
Sources tell Bloomberg that Putin pitched holding a popular referendum in Crimea so that its citizens could decide if they wanted to stay as part of Russia or return to Ukraine, which held the territory until Russia annexed it in 2014.
During the discussion, Putin agreed not to disclose the plan publicly so the U.S. president could consider it, according to Bloombergs sources.
The publication writes that Ukrainian officials will likely be alarmed by Putins proposal and even more so by Trumps willingness to consider it. As the report notes, Ukrainian officials in the past have accused Russia of rigging elections in the disputed territories to make it seem as though there is more popular support for the Russian annexation than there really is.

(21,692 posts)This falls into something of a gray area, since Crimea was, in fact, historically Russian, and only "became" Ukrainian after it was tranferred to it by the Soviet Union (which no longer exists).
Most Crimeans are Russian moreover.
Having said that, Putin's agression in Eastern Ukraine is another matter - and does merit sanctions.

(43,220 posts)Putin broke that treaty.
There's no gray area involved.

(21,692 posts)Putin's agressions in Eastern Ukraine alone warrant sanctions and diplomatic pushback - neither of which Cheeto is even willing to discuss, for rea$on$ we're all aware.

(86,872 posts)there have been a few periods during the past four centuries, in which Russia has controlled either Ukraine or Crimea... that doesn't exactly equate to "historically Russian" in most historians' measures.

(21,692 posts)Particularly given the atrocities involved.
When we push for the need for sanctions, censure, and diplomatic isolation of the Putin regime, the Eastern Ukraine onslaught is our best case by far.
Not that Cheeto gives a flying fuck.

(79 posts)Riiiight. If it comes to pass, I'm sure it will show that 100% of the people in Crimea voted to stay part of glorious Mother Russia and their fearless leader Vlad.
