They will have convoluted reasons for why they did what they did. They will try to downplay the damage and their role in it. They will have excuses for why they thought they were doing the right thing. They will try to portray themselves as innocent.

(19,987 posts)a positive for the country and a potential challenge for the Democratic Party.
The positive is that there may well be a re-alignment of the opposition to the Democratic Party, where a New/Rebooted GOP marginalises the RWNJ of their current party. In the short term that would hurt them electorally against Democrats, however by moving their political ground to "mainstream politics", they would appeal to those independents, conservative in outlook but disgusted by what the GOP has become. The challenge for the Democrats is that they would then appeal to Centrists who have become fertile ground for the Democratic Party. I think, in the long term that is good for Democracy in the US, but it's something Democrats need to prepare for..

(31,261 posts)Some of them helped build it, but it turned into a Frankenstein on them, it got taken over by the angry White evangelicals that the Lincoln consort played footsie with since Nixon. They want angry White evangelicals gone and they want us to help them achieve that - which is ok with me, Trumpism is a serious threat to this country and its future.

(2,770 posts)If any of you know them, please encourage them to help dismantle the propaganda machine that has made our country almost ungovernable because of the irrational tribalism they built up.
I'd urge the Biden Administration to appoint a blue-ribbon commission much like the Hutchins Commission (officially named the Commission on Freedom of the Press) after World War II to tackle disinformation and set up protocols that led to the FCC's "blue book" and Fairness Doctrine regulations.
Their charge would be to:
1. Lay out a history of what and how.
2. Make the harm visible and crystal clear.
3. Propose legislative and possibly constitutional remedies.
Our media landscape is far more complex now than back then so it will be far more difficult. And the 1st Amendment issues are very thorny. A Truth and Reconciliation process might help uncover their methodology and go a long way to deprogramming the cultists.
I definitely want some of the Lincoln Project people (or backers) to be part of helping us to unwind the damage done.

(22,919 posts)Of course they want to see a viable conservative political party rise from the ashes of the current Republican Party, that goes without saying. And of course, should that happen, said party will stand in opposition to many program priorities of Democrats, and those disagreements will be consequential. I get all that. But I also get that they are all in when it comes to exposing and countering the toxicity to our democracy of Trump's regime. And they put their professional lives where their political ads mouth is when they also take on all of the current Republican Party office holding Trump enablers. They know that nothing of any integrity can rise from the ashes of today's Republican Party until the existing structure is first burned to the ground. I can't ask for more than that from people with whom I ideologically differ. They know our nation is at stake.
