Downtown protests remain calm with police out of sight; march on east side sheriff’s office declared unlawful assembly

Black Lives Matter protests continued for the 66th day in Portland on Saturday, and for the third night since federal officers left their post at the Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse.

Since federal officers have stopped their nightly tear-gassing of the crowds, protest leaders attempted to shift the tenor downtown – away from the block around the courthouse and back to broader issues of injustice and police brutality faced by Black Americans.

Though that may have happened downtown, a protest on the east side of the city was declared an unlawful assembly by Portland police. Protesters were allegedly throwing glass bottles and pointing lasers at police. Portland police were out in the streets, pushing protesters west on Burnside and occasionally rushing into crowds and chasing protesters through residential neighborhoods.

The Portland chapter of the NAACP hosted an event at the Battleship Oregon Memorial at Tom McCall Waterfront Park Saturday evening called “Re-centering Why We’re Here,” with City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley among the speakers.
