Former President Donald Trump and those closest to him believed before Election Day that he would win a second term, "their views swayed by the assurances of pro-Trump pundits and the unscientific measure of the size and excitement of the president's rally crowds," The New York Times reports. Trump had laid the groundwork for a Plan B, arguing that he lost only because of a vast conspiracy of fraud, but he and his close circle didn't think he would need it, the Times reports:
Flying home on Air Force One from the final campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the early hours of Nov. 3., Mr. Trump's son Eric proposed an Electoral College betting pool. He wagered that the president would win at least 320 electoral votes, according to a person present for the exchange. "We're just trying to get to 270," an adviser more grounded in polling and analytics replied. [The New York Times]
The Times did not report how much Eric Trump bet or whether he ever paid up. But watching returns come in on election night, Donald Trump "fell into enraged disbelief as his lead inexorably dissipated, even in formerly red states like Arizona," the Times reports. "Eric Trump goaded him on a dynamic that would play out in the weeks to come." Read more about Trump's post-election machinations at The New York Times.

(183,014 posts)but they really thought that? Was Eric just doing this to impress his boss?

(65,396 posts)They thought THEY had rigged it! That's why they were so shocked.
Reminds me of "The Sting". The poker scene where when Gondorf ouwits Robert Shaw's character, he says " What was I supposed to do? Call him for cheating better than me in front of the others?"
They were so sure they had it nicked that the only way they could lose is if the other side cheated better.
A stolen election myth was born.

(16,954 posts)I DO believe that THEY thought the "fix was in" and there was NO WAY they could lose.
And THAT is why they've totally lost it!
"How can we have it fixed and STILL lose?"
So, consider this:
If they DID have things fixed to deliver votes to IQ45 - JUST HOW BAD DID HE REALLY LOSE?
ProfessorGAC
(65,396 posts)I believe the fix was: a)voter suppression, b) plans for lawsuits, and c) a convenient pandemic to reduce turnout.
They got stuck with only a). B) was a total failure, and turnout was huge.
Remember, they don't care about the popular vote. Just 270.
So, he did lose by 7 million. But, they figured he'd run a dead heat and get their 270.
Wrong & wrong.

(183,014 posts)Just like the landslide talk they drill that into their peoples heads. The 81M for Biden is completely false though.
I think the inner chambers thought they had the fix in. The rabble were just convinced that their choice was just that bewilderingly great. That and they thought declaring victory early would have actual results. They were absolutely SURE he was going to win in a landslide.
ProfessorGAC
(65,396 posts)They knew they were going to turn out their side. They never expected 74 million votes. They certainly didn't expect Biden to get 10% more votes.
They would have been pleased with 62 million Biden, 60 million T----. Then, their EC fix is made.
MyOwnPeace
(16,954 posts)Suppression and poor turnout could indeed have made a difference - and yes, after 4 years of stuffing the courts, woulda' coulda' made the difference.
And yes, the "GET OUT THE VOTE" did indeed make a huge difference!

Popular as Peale and his wisdom became, some critics dismissed Peale's lines as mere bromides, scarcely worthy of note. Other scientific and religious thinkers found the Peale approach downright dangerous.
A Methodist bishop of the 1950s called Peale's following a cult, saying it worshiped success rather than Christ. A leading Unitarian minister in Washington D.C. called the Peale program "an escape from reality."
The prominent theologian Reinhold Niebuhr said Peale's teachings "corrupted" the Christian gospel and "hurts people too ... helps them feel good while they are evading the real issues of life."

You'd have to be in a major right-wing disinformation bubble to be surprised that Biden won.
Heck, many of us on DU were upset on election night because Biden/Harris didn't quite meet expectations of some state polls.
