(15,981 posts)Been working on weatherizing kitties sleeping quarters. Will probably let them in our breezeway for a couple of the really dangerously low temp nights. Ordered them self heating mats, but won't get here soon enough.
Snow I love Black ice not so much!!!

(115 posts)heating pads from Walmart will work. I laid some towels over them in dog houses and the dogs loved them.

(18,874 posts)After the cat lays down it heats up to body temp. I have her box wraped in three layers of blankets and an outer layer of plastic .
It's really cold here in KCMO and she has been fine.

At the most, our outside faucets will need to be changed out. (They tend to go bad when we have weather in the low 20s)
But we survived 5 degrees in 1989 without any real damage.
My son has a pier and beam house. (Built in 1928)
Another son has an A/C in the attic. All that condensation in the a/c drain can cause bursts.
He may have plumbing in the attic. His home was built in 2018.

(5,113 posts)i moved to austin from wisconsin to get away from this type of weather 11 years ago.
Ive seen forecasts for low temps anywhere from 9 (tolerable) at least to -2(nuts). winds may hit 30-40mph. anywhere from an inch to 8" of snow depending on the forecast plus ice.

(16,207 posts)You can either add an electric heater (the small ones with blower) or if you have height, an oil lamp to keep the contained volume under a tarp warm.
Last May we had freezes here in Connecticut and I kept tomato plants alive using these techniques.

(25,813 posts)Pile a bunch of soil around the graft. If the graft still holds, then the tree will resprout. If the graft dies, then the tree will sprout from Sour Orange rootstock, which looks like an orange, but tastes awful
You don't need to pre-treat with fungicide or insecticide if doing this for short term:

There is a large avocado tree in my neighborhood. It is about 20 feet tall and casts great shade. It's gonna be a goner.

(42,770 posts)you made me realize there are so many who are not. Tomorrow... round up blankets and drive around to people who truely need them. Thank you.

(33,473 posts)It's not unprecedented. Winter is serious some years; it's -10 in Montana.
Plus, Anthropogenic Climate Change is real.

(25,813 posts) Disconnect all hoses from faucets. Cover exposed faucets. If your sprinkler system does not have a freeze override, put it in the Off position. Bring end-of-hose lawn sprinklers into the garage so that trapped moisture wont freeze and rupture their internal workings.

(15,813 posts)Between Thursday night and Saturday (this morning) we were supposed to get about 10 of snow in back to back storms.
At my place between Thursday night and mid Friday morning, I saw about 4 of snow. The dogs were having a blast. Then the snow switched over to freezing rain/pellets. I definitely have a few more inches of accumulation but its solidly frozen.
We use chains for our gutter downspouts. Really heavy chains - and they work great in a downpour. They are solidly coated with a couple of inches of ice. Beautiful.
Ive been hearing booms on and off for a few hours. I assume they are tree branches dropping. Still have power so it isnt transformers blowing.
I have huge fir trees on and around my property. Itll be a fun day of seeing how much damage there is. Its much worse down the valley. 10 miles north of here saw tons of fluffy snow last night.
