Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Plans to Roll Out Slower Mail, Higher Prices

Undeterred by the backlash and widespread delays that followed his disruptive operational changes at the U.S. Postal Service last year, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is reportedly planning to roll out another slate of policies that would significantly hike postage rates and further slow the delivery of certain kinds of mail.

While the plan has yet to be finalized, new details of the proposal — first reported by the Washington Post — intensified pressure on President Joe Biden to take decisive action before DeJoy inflicts any more damage on the most popular government institution in the country.

“Fire DeJoy before he burns down the USPS,” Zephyr Teachout, associate professor of law at Fordham University, tweeted Saturday. “Biden has the power to fill the board that decides his fate. That board should be full of people who believe in public postal services. And that board must be ready to fire him quickly.”

According to the Post, DeJoy — with the support of the USPS Board of Governors, which is composed entirely of Trump appointees — is “preparing to put all first-class mail onto a single delivery track… a move that would mean slower and more costly delivery for both consumers and commercial mailers.”

My grandmother was postmaster of a small town for years. This assault on the postal service makes me so damn mad.

And you say it's been too long since they raised rates

So, do you think they should raise the rates every single week?

even with pension and healthcare prefunding, so they can make long-term plans to improve the Postal Service and its ability to meet today’s and tomorrow’s needs.

And, for your information, the first class - 2 day delivery goal letter rate — was not increased.

Our rates are low compared to other industrialized countries, and we are just setting up the USPS for long-term failure.

junk mail, I hope they do raise those rates. A lot of people have "forever" stamps, so that will make less of an impact on them, at least as long as their supply of stamps hold out.

You said it had been too long since they raised rates

And actually they did raise the rates on Priority, a 3.5% increase. And first class was raised 6.5%

Mail service is already dismal.

The nightly news reports repeatedly that mail is not being delivered—customers are told to pick it up themselves.... in long lines, in the cold ....

He erased organizational memory during the “Friday Night Massacre” last summer when he fired 33 top executives.

This is an unprecedented breakdown and firing him is only a beginning. It will take two to three times as long to rebuild, repurchase and reinstall the multimillion dollar sorting equipment he ordered discarded and reacclimate the workforce.

of junk mail, that's just fine with me. "Commercial mailers" really stuck out in that OP.

Modern people use electronic means of getting and paying bills. A slowdown by the USPS might only affect shipping on the stuff I get from eBay.
