ATLANTIC CITY (The Borowitz Report)In a possible indication of Donald J. Trumps continuing hold over the G.O.P., a new poll shows that ninety per cent of Republicans would book rooms at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City.
Of those polled, a broad majority strongly agreed with the statement that the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino offers the finest lodgings in the United States.
Additionally, those surveyed characterized any reports suggesting that the Trump property would be less than an ideal place to stay as a hoax.
At the United States Senate, the Republicans Ron Johnson, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley announced that they had just booked rooms at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, which has emerged as the front-runner to host the 2024 Republican National Convention.

(206,934 posts)I'm wondering what they did with the profits? When it comes to Trump, I'm always suspicious...
As for Howard Johnsons, I remember them well as a kid. Did you know that there is still one remaining? It's in Lake George, New York, just a few minutes north of me. However, last I knew, it wasn't doing well - the proprietor was brought up on charges of sexually harassing his employees. And I believe that's where Rachael Ray got her start, he mother managed that restaurant back in the day.

(19,205 posts)I think they used to boast about having 12 different flavors of ice cream. I may be wrong about the actual number, but it was something like that. When you saw the orange and blue arches, you knew what the place was immediately. It was one of, if not the first, motel chains in America. So many of these great old places, Big Boy, A&W, Dog&Suds, etc. were the landscape of my life when I was a youngster. The post WWII economic boom made a lot of people well off, if not filthy rich.
Memories, Rhiannon. Memories. They can't take those away.

(206,934 posts)There used to be a HoJos just down the road from me growing up which was one of the few places my Dad liked to go to dinner. He apparently had invested in it and said it was one of the "fanciest" HoJos since they had a lot of capital when they built it. I belonged to some girls' group that met right across the way and we usually stopped there for ice cream after our meeting and I remember all the flavors listed up on the wall!
And after my grandmother decided to retire to North Carolina, she'd spend the summers up here, then I'd ride down with her to NC where she spent winters and fly back - and we'd stop at HoJos the whole way - you always knew what you were getting! The Friday Fish Fries were especially popular!
And the one in Lake George is still there (though not currently open):

(327 posts)...why was it so familiar?
As a Brit I wouldn't know the "HoJo" chain. As a name, it would be pretty unremarkable.
Then I remembered, I stayed on an overnight transit hotel called the Howard Johnson, in Dubai.
