(12,286 posts)I think the deadly variants are just getting ready to take off and people have been lulled into a very false sense if security thinking the vaccine is going to save us.
I sense people thinking its over because the post holiday surge is subsiding.
The variant surge is coming.

(16,210 posts)Some are less effective than against the original strain but they virtually stop hospitalization against all. When it comes to young people dying, my friends brother was a doctor in NYC and recounted filling out death certificates for otherwise healthy people in their 20s. It has always killed some young but people havent listened.

(3,065 posts)...there in community spread, the more spins of the evolutionary mutation wheel it gets and the chances of something even nastier developing are a serious risk. The more shots in arms sooner, the better off we will be. How no one in the Trump admin besides Fauci could get this and the fact that the media wasn't speaking to it still amazes me.

(5,551 posts)The Woodward tapes prove that. They downplayed it for political gain.
"Political gain" in this case is a euphemism for "mass murder". Or GENOCIDE.

Maybe these fucking MASKHOLES would wake up and realize we are still CRITICAL.
Alas, most of the IMBECILIC MORONS in the US still think its no big deal.
And yet schools etc should open. NO... stop ******* around and get everyone vaccinated first.

(11,585 posts)The virus is more than bad enough by itself, it doesn't need no-mask, no-social distancing, large-gathering covidiots helping it along.
And yes, I realize this nurse's recounting her experiences is anecdotal, but part of the reason the continent is in this mess is not listening to experts. Their experience can be trusted, I think.

(11,803 posts)Just more contagious, which obviously can lead to more deaths.
But its not more deadly. And unless theyre gene sequencing, does she know its the variants that are killing the younger people? Because while younger people were hospitalised a bit more here in the UK, the variant here wasnt more deadly for young people either.

(2,868 posts)had opened their schools, until the new variant, and they had to close all schools. The UK variant here is doubling every ten days, and there should be no need to explain exponential growth. The RightWing is pushing to open all the schools, and the Repubs are galloping into the valley of death.

(3,282 posts)Bad reporting.
There is a difference in reporting on the pandemic and fear mongering. The reporting should focus on data based journalism and expert opinions, not anecdotal experiences of one ICU nurse.
This combined with the "Vaccine won't work against x" reports will prolong the pandemic by making less people get a shot.
Covid has always killed young people with no health issues at some rate. If it just so happens two or three of those events are in the same hospital, that will cause an edge case experience for that staff that is not reflected in the larger dataset.
