SAN ANTONIO Texas Democrats conceded that Republicans won the state's turnout battle in the 2020 election by staying in the field despite the coronavirus pandemic, while the state's Democrats relied on digital and more unreliable telephone contact with voters.
According to a post-election report provided in advance to NBC News, the party lost its "most powerful and competitive advantage" when it didn't dispatch volunteers to canvass in person, following the directive of Joe Biden's campaign after the pandemic hit.
"Our inability to campaign was really devastating for us, especially with our main base. Our main base is Latino voters, and they do not take well to mail and texting contact," Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said.
The report, released Monday, found that even though Democrats turned out at higher rates than expected, so did Republican voters, who outperformed the higher Democratic turnout.

(5,547 posts)Sure it pisses me off that Republicans broke all the protocols in order to win.
But more specifically, why do people need a personal hand-delivered invitation to make sure they vote? It's your fucking democracy people! Vote because it matters and not because someone has to nag you to death.

Honestly the blame on canvassing is bs.
That argument is a lazy journo's approach to actual truth-finding
No one canvassed me & I managed to locate my precinct & mark that ballot.

(5,547 posts)I think the Journos are kind of right that we got beat at the ground game.
My question is why should the ground game matter? It is absolute apathy and laziness on the part of the voter that they would stay home without someone to come by to rouse them out of their slumber.
They don't deserve a democracy if they are not willing to actively participate in it.

Exactly right.
Its not as though the Nov election happened one day with no one knowing about it.
The election date & local resources were everywhere 24/7.
Maybe journos should start making THAT a statement & stop with seeking a single target to point the finger of shame at.

(14,162 posts)the fact is that a ground game is necessary in most cases.

Hopefully Beto will have a good chance in 2022.
He came close last time when many didn't know him, now that they see how much he has done for the state maybe his votes will go up.

Pisses me off
I too hope by Nov 2022 we will have the virus under more control.
For The People HR 1 has got to be passed for the sake of 2022 voting rights.
And god forbid we elect Beto O'Rourke as Senator or Govenor of Tx, it will a life changing event for this State.
