7 year old asks Old Navy to make girls jeans with "real pockets" "would like to put things in them"

A first-grader in Arkansas is quickly learning the power of persuasion.

Kamryn Gardner, whose class recently learned how to write persuasive letters, used her new skills to pen a request to Old Navy. The 7 year-old asked the retailer to create jeans with real pockets.

"Dear Old Navy," Gardner wrote. "I do not like that the front pockets of the girls jeans are fake. I want front pockets because I want to put my hands in them. I also would like to put things in them. Would you consider making girls jeans with front pockets that are not fake. Thank you for reading my request."

Old Navy responded to first grader's letter and sent her four pairs of bottoms with real pockets, according to Evening Star Elementary's Facebook post.

I trued buying online but the sizes varied too much.

Women's are much worse. You can buy a size 10 and it fits so you just pick up a second one and it won't fit. They are all made in different countries and each country does the sizes differently.

And shoes? Holy cow. Those sizes are all over the place.

For some reason, even sweatpants often are cut more 'form fitting' for women than they should be given they are sweatpants. It's annoying, so I just quit buying them and went to the men's section. Problem solved.

Before designer jeans, it was more common for everyone to wear men's jeans, so the pocket issue was less noticeable and men's pants sizing compared to women's was a revelation. Levi's 501s were the bomb back in the day. I don't wear jeans as much any more, but next time around I might just have to get a pair.

eta - oo, and painter's pants! Those were big for both sexes in junior high. Put 'em on damp and they'd dry shrink to fit your shape. You want pockets? Lots! I loved those pants.

But she is built with feminine curves. Still, she buys many of her daily clothes from the boys' section of the department store. They fit her better than the comparable women's clothes. She wants pockets in her jeans, she wants shirts that don't expose her mid-drift every time she raises her arms and she doesn't want to pay designer prices for clothes that aren't practical.

Kudos to Old Navy, especially if they make the pocketed-pants available retail, (are they already?).

The few times I bought women's jeans, they were too baggy in the butt and the pockets were inconsistent. Some had really small pockets, and at least one pair had pockets that went almost to my knees!

And as you say, men's jeans are tougher. The denim used for women's jeans is thinner and can't take much wear - not good when you're patching fence.

Toughskins: 1971-present

.If the Sears Silvertone was the unofficial first guitar for musicians, then Toughskins is the unofficial first pair of pants for schoolchildren. Printed and online testimonials abound from people whose first memory of their childhood is going to the first day of school outfitted in Toughskins.

Sears touted the new line of Toughskins children's pants as "The toughest of Sears tough jeans...lab tests prove it!" Toughskins debuted as a new blend of materials, including Dacron Type 59 polyester, DuPont 420 nylon, and cotton.

The "tri-blend" was a conscious effort on the part of Sears to develop a brand of jeans that was exclusive to Sears. In the 1960s, Sears' children's jeans were made of the same material as that of its competitors. When market research showed that durability was the most important feature for parents buying children's jeans, then Sears' engineers headed into the laboratory to develop a stronger material than either the 50-50 blend of cotton and polyester or 100-percent composition of jeans most commonly found in stores at the time.

To demonstrate just how tough the new jeans were, Sears launched a famous "Tough Jeans Territory" ad campaign in 1974, in which Sears constructed a trampoline out of the Toughskin material. Sears was so sure of the new line of pants that they were sold with a guarantee that children would grow out of their Toughskin jeans before the jeans wore out.

Toughskin jeans were marketed for both boys and girls, ranging in age from toddlers to teenagers. Sears later expanded the line of Toughskins jeans to include corduroy jeans, denim jackets, and men's work clothes.

In the 1990s, a second generation of children wore Toughskins, which were featured items in the new Kids & More departments at Sears stores.

I rarely carry one at all. Certainly not while running, or walking my dogs, or hiking, or while doing a million other things. I’ve worn men jeans all my life, same with shorts because they have POCKETS. I HATED girls’ clothes as a child, mostly because of the pockets. I’ve learned mens’ clothes last longer in general also.

My Mom had quite the cottage industry of altering denim clothing for people such as yourself.

She had worked in a shoe factory during her younger years and had one of the few sewing machines around that could manage denim and muslin. (which was also in style in those days)

Mostly taking in the legs of larger jeans so the hips would fit, but, also the lower waist of jackets to allow room at the top.

It is the fastest and is also a means to stay with the current fashions. If such is important to you.

Unfortunately, it is also a bit of an art.

I never practiced it myself. Watching her I did pick up the majority of the trick is to buy the item sized with alteration in mind and then she'd completely remove the side seams and re-create them to conform to the measurements required.

She was always making me a new jacket. I have very broad shoulders and she would bring in the waist. They were often 'stolen' by friends. Because, off the shelf, most jackets are cylindrical at best. If they fit the top so you can move they hang like tents on the bottom. The cold cold wind would blow up in there.

Length is an easy hem and I have done that for myself.

Five-pocket jeans, two-pocket shirts, and jackets with multiple outside and inside pockets. That's my daily wardrobe. Even the watch pocket on my jeans has a use. I carry $1 in change in that pocket. Three quarters, two dimes and a nickel. I do not carry pennies, though. Ever.

Funny thing: The thrift store I most frequently visit (I buy shirts there) labels the rows of clothing racks for men this way: Men's Tops, Men's Bottoms, and Men's Coats. I always chuckle at that. I guess it's mostly women who shop for clothes at thrift stores. Not me. The last time I was in my favorite thrift store, i spotted a 70s Pendleton Black Watch plaid wool shirt. It was an XL size. It fit me perfectly, because it had been washed and shrank. Looked like it had never been worn. $1.99. Score!

If I put my wallet in my handbag, I have to be constantly aware of where it is at all times.

And mind you, I don't necessarily need to carry a wallet. Driver's license, a couple of bucks, debit card. So I think the pocket doesn't have to be huge, but it can't be so small that just those few small items are going to slip out every time I sit down.

I found a purse once down the street from a garage sale that had fallen off someone's car. I didn't want to leave it with the sketchy person running the garage sale, so I took it with me. I checked the wallet, found the owner's address and looked her up in the phone book. (remember those?"

She answered the phone, so I drove the purse to her house and gave it to her. Happy woman! She offered to give me $20, but I said, "No, thanks."

I want pockets in my jeans, too. And any other bottoms except very dressy pants. I buy all of my jeans, etc. at Duluth Trading. (Yes they have a women’s division) All bottoms have multiple, real pockets. Ditto the skorts and shorts. Plus they have a variety of fits because we are not all 5’10”, long legged, no hips women. In addition, their tops are long enough to prevent embarrassment. Kind of pricey to be sure. But they have frequent sales and the stuff wears forever.
