Damn I love the Irish!Harry and Meghan: The union of two great houses, the Windsors and the

Celebrities, is complete
https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/tv-radio-web/harry-and-meghan-the-union-of-two-great-houses-the-windsors-and-the-celebrities-is-complete-1.4504502

Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.

Beyond this, it’s the stuff of children’s stories. Having a queen as head of state is like having a pirate or a mermaid or Ewok as head of state. What’s the logic? Bees have queens, but the queen bee lays all of the eggs in the hive. The queen of the Britons has laid just four British eggs, and one of those is the sweatless creep Prince Andrew, so it’s hardly deserving of applause.

We cut sporadically to the couple’s own property, where they wander in hoodies, jeans and anoraks, as if to say, ‘We’re just regular rich folk, Oprah, no different from you or Tom Hanks or Jeff Bezos’
The contemporary royals have no real power. They serve entirely to enshrine classism in the British nonconstitution. They live in high luxury and low autonomy, cosplaying as their ancestors, and are the subject of constant psychosocial projection from people mourning the loss of empire. They’re basically a Rorschach test that the tabloids hold up in order to gauge what level of hysterical batshittery their readers are capable of at any moment in time.

No different than Hollywood.

Once you strip away the "veneer", the Brits just propped up these folks and these rituals to be their country's celebrities. Harry played along until it was obvious Meghan was going to be cast as the "bad girl" by the tabloids along with the fact that Buck House refused to protect her. Diana redux.

And the two of them were facing a lifetime of having Charles then William as their boss?

Fuck that shit.

Meghan knew that if you're going to be a celebrity, you might as well call the shots. I mean she already was a celebrity so she knew there was another way.

Megs and Harry blew a big ass hole in the illusion of the Royal gig. Good

syndrome of the archaic system - lots of those colonists were seconds or further down the pecking order, in which the top spot was all for the heir.

As for her, her celebrity was not top slot either. And the two together aren't really devoid of the appurtenances of the archaic system. She bewailed to Oprah about their kid's being denied a title. They seem to want it both ways - keep status but do what they want.

Over the course of the interview Harry and Meghan, who are charming, clever and good at being celebrities, make the monarchy look like an archaic and endemically racist institution that has no place in the modern world. Well duh. And despite all the outrage you might read in the UK tabloids right now, they also did something else that renders everything else irrelevant: they officially launched themselves in the United States.

Thanks for posting it. It's pretty funny.

just because they exposed the sheer lunacy of the entire concept and said "well if we are going to be famous anywhere, might as well get away from bad weather, bad food, and boring people".

The fact that Piers Morgan and the British press hate them makes them even cooler to me.

People forget where the British Monarchy got all of their wealth. The old saying, "The sun
never sets on the British Empire." means that they had colonies all around the world.
Their riches came from those places. I love the English people, I loathe the royals. I am 3/8 English, 1/2 Irish,
and 1/8 Crow.

Like all Americans, I’m a mutt, Irish possibly being the larger share as the name is Irish and we look Irish — but the English is undeniable as well, as well as the this’n’that that comes in as the generations unfold in America.

As much as I grew up loving Irish folk music, the hatred that will never die in the North of that beautiful island is too much for me to ever want to claim as my own. I’m an American and we have enough Troubles of our own.

I don’t loathe the royals, I mean really why bother? I think of them as an anachronism, but as a uniquely dysfunctional family they are kind of interesting. And Meghan, after all, is a California Girl — welcome back to the sunshine, Meghan.

Re: their Netflix deal
“Of course, their critics accuse them of being money-hungry careerists for this, but that’s hilarious coming from sycophants to hereditary tax-suckling grifters. Arranging a Netflix deal that the couple actually have to work for is pretty benign royal behaviour when you compare it with conquest and general parasitism.”
