(4,170 posts)He had to know he was going to lose. Especially after that awful closing statement.

(16,646 posts)To tell the truth, I don't think his heart was ever fully in it. He was like a trained animal, going through the motions of putting on a defense, but without any real passion. That's why the jury was reportedly falling asleep during his closing arguments. A skilled defense attorney who believes in what he is doing can hold a jury's attention even when they aren't buying what he's selling. That was not the case here.
The contrast with the genuine and righteous passion of the prosecution was quite dramatic, and I think that had a lot to do with why the prosecution was so convincing while the defense was not.

(11,682 posts)Mr. Nelson looked totally unsurprised by the verdict. I almost felt sorry for him. I found myself nodding off a few times during the closing statement. Even the judge seemed to be pleading for mercy not to mention a lunch break. How the jury managed to stay awake I'll never know. I might suggest watching the defense's closing statement as a cure for insomnia.

(8,445 posts)I suppose we'll being seeing this clip a lot, but I appreciate you putting it up. I was busy and missed seeing it happen. I honestly didn't expect the verdict to come today.

(8,445 posts)I watched the full video and cried all the way through it. After that, I couldn't watch more than a few minutes here and there.
I found things to keep myself busy pretty much all day, thinking the verdict wouldn't be reached for a couple of days. I'm glad I was wrong about that.

(16,646 posts)I was so giddy with joy and relief (especially the latter) that I managed to miss that moment somehow.

(6,477 posts)That's fairness for me. To each their own, though.
