Battle over Jan 6th Capitol riot commission erupts at GOP retreat

The Republican Party retreat that occurred in Florida over the weekend apparently didn't bring about the party unity that many GOP leaders had hoped for.

Politico reports that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is still clashing with fellow Republicans over whether to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.

While Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has endorsed a commission to investigate all kinds of political violence, Cheney tells Politico that a commission is needed solely for the January 6th riots because they were aimed at the peaceful transition of power.

"If we minimize what happened on Jan. 6th and if we appease it, then we will be in a situation where every election cycle, you could potentially have another constitutional crisis," she said. "If you get into a situation where we don't guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, we won't have learned the lessons of Jan. 6."

I feel the same way about her. She's from the state next door and it amazes me that she won in the first place but at this point, I'm thankful she isn't one of the zombies.

It wasn't that long ago that she lied about her residency when applying for, of all things, a fishing license in Wyoming; at the time, she was a longtime resident of DC. She only moved back to Wyoming when she decided to run for office, evoking memories of when her father ran back to Casper to rent an apartment in order to claim Wyoming residency so that he could join W on the GOP ticket; the Constitution forbids a prez and veep from the same state, hence the move, nevermind that Cheney had lived in Texas long enough to claim the homestead exemption on his taxes.

Liz is very much her father's daughter, and we ignore that at our peril. Her ambitions don't stop in the House, and keeping her name and image in the public conversation works to the benefit of those ambitions. Her heinous parent is one of the more horrid examples of GOP impunity, who even received an apology from the man he'd shot in the face. Given the GOP record of failing upward, Liz may be counting on a degree of elevation from what may be construed as figuratively shooting Trump in the face. She has her own agenda, and it doesn't contain anything to merit either our trust or respect. Again, she is her father's daughter.

Still, compared to the Trumpist wing of the R party, Liz is an absolute consitutionalist.

And apologies for not immediately connecting you with any of the many posts I've read on the subject. Around my circle Dick is also remembered for having given Ken Buck his first job out of law school, and Buck certainly has a record that does not suggest respect for the Constitution; we are hoping that Colorado's gain of a seat will help us to replace Dick's protégé with someone who actually deserves the title of representative.

No matter what LC's hidden agenda may be, I am happy to watch Kevin McCarthy and the rest of those disgusting insurrectionist douche nozzles writhe and squirm and fume and sputter while she stands firm about the need for a Jan. 6 commission. As long as she keeps holding their feet to the fire, I will cheer her on, no matter what her political ambitions may be or what a horrible human being her father is.

When she says, "If we minimize what happened on Jan. 6th and if we appease it, then we will be in a situation where every election cycle, you could potentially have another constitutional crisis. If you get into a situation where we don't guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, we won't have learned the lessons of Jan. 6," I am SO freaking here for that.

If someone does the right thing for less than perfect reasons, it's still the right thing, and I'm going to give them credit for that. Especially when they're standing up the leaders of their own party and telling them that, in effect, they are full of shit.

Who cares if she moved back to Wyoming just so she could run for office? I didn't hold it against Hillary Clinton when she and Bill moved to New York (a state neither of them had ever lived in before) so she could run for a New York Senate seat. Politicians do that stuff all the time. Why does it matter if she'd like to be a senator or even president someday? She's allowed to want that and to strategize accordingly, just like any other politician.

Yes, her father is horrible, but she's not him, and I think it's just possible that she doesn't share every single one of his heinous qualities. Even if she did, she's doing the right thing right now, and I think she's entitled to some respect for that. I don't have to think she's an angel or like her politics to say, "Way to go, Liz" in this particular instance.

If she does something horrible, I'll be right there to drag her for it. But right now, she's doing something I approve of. I'm not going to drag her just because she might possibly decide to do something horrible in the future.
