The world's most powerful cricket nation and this year's host, India, was in deep trouble this morning as the result of the New Zealand v Afghanistan match would decide India's fate. NZ was always going to win this. This happened before the match.

Mohan Singh, pitch curator of Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, was found dead ahead of Sunday's T20 World Cup game between Afghanistan and New Zealand. According to a source, Mohan Singh had made the pitch for the Super 12 game between New Zealand and Afghanistan.
The cause of his death remains unknown. Mohan, who hails from Mohali, worked extensively with former BCCI chief curator Daljit Singh in Mohali before moving to the UAE in the early 2000s.
Daljit, who served Indian cricket for 22 years, was shocked after learning about Mohan's demise.
"After he went to the UAE, he used to come to visit every time he was in the country but I had not seen him for a while. Gone too soon and it is really tragic," Daljit told PTI.
The International Cricket Council has sent its condolences to the family of Mohan Singh, the curator at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi who passed away earlier on Sunday.

It hardly matters whether this was suicide or murder - it is madness - all over the result of a game.

(16,888 posts)The role of the Pitch Curator is apparently an important one - yet I am not exactly certain why anyone would want to kill a Pitch Curator.
How exactly does it (or doesnt) relate to this match between the Kiwis and Afghanistan?

People take sport too seriously but that is because there is so much gambling associated with it.

(269,328 posts)because of gambling among the nobility and insurance companies are younger than horseracing and it's associated gambling. The Jockey Club is older than Lloyds of London Way back when I used to dig up paintings and then photos of cricket grounds in England - that old betting tent was usually visible. I even found 19th century poems and stories about gambling in the so called gentleman's sport.
And I can tell you that there is serious cricket gambling in India and the current World Cup locations.
India's departure must have cost hundreds of millions in losses.
