Cynicism is a cheap substitute for wisdom, but the two should not be confused with one another.
At least, that's long been the advice I've given myself.
More and more, however, I'm not seeing much daylight between cynicism and wisdom.
Someone posts about new subpoenas from the 1/6 committee? The only response I can muster is a derisive, sarcastic snort about how much that will leave the recipients quaking in their boots.
Someone posts about BBB? My only thoughts are about how much more Manchin and Sinema intend to erode what's left of that bill, if they'll ever even vote for it at all, or maybe only vote for it once they've turned into into something progressives are too disgusted to vote for.
Voting rights? Hah! You think mere democracy in enough to make Manchin and Sinema give a damn about reforming their precious filibuster?
American voters being smart enough to realize the close brush with totalitarianism we just survived? Hey, they've got bigger concerns, like CRT and the price of gas, and won't care that Republicans can only deliver the racism. Gotta lash out against the party of the current President if you're unhappy! Why should anyone expect you to think deeper than that?

(10,436 posts)Mueller left a roadmap to prosecute MF45 and his corrupt administration once he left office. We still haven't gotten to see the reporting its apparently all gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
It's really a shame that we can't go to a supposedly "liberal democratic " website to air those opinions and discuss them without being told to "love" Maserati Manchin and getting called an impatient ninny

(15,450 posts)...the economy might, just might be back in better shape by time the next election rolls around (it's not really that bad right now, but, ya know, "perception" ), and maybe COVID will have gone from pandemic to endemic and not as big of a political concern.
But when you add the historical record for all President's parties usually losing Congressional seats in the midterms, and Republican voter suppression and even voter negation by Republican legislatures on top of that, holding Congress in 2022 will be a miracle.
The only other factor I can think of to possibly sway things in favor of Democrats is the results of various investigations into Trump finally bearing fruit, like the Georgia election interference case or various New York cases (I'm not holding out for the DoJ doing much).
But even then, voters would have to care that Trump, and so many of his supporters and henchmen, are corrupt. I don't think they do care. It's all just a sideshow. Even among those who might care, many would just say "they're all corrupt" and figure Democrats are just as bad as Republicans even without evidence of that being true.

(7,420 posts)Maybe some minor folks will get some jail time but no one of any consequence.
Like Bush and the phony Iraq war - no consequences there either. I recall reading that our top generals liked to hang around the George V hotel bar in Paris and drink single malt scotch. I assume that's where some of the 6 trillion (cost of war) or was it the 8 billion that is still missing was spent.
How long can we go on like this - shoveling our world class screw ups under the rug with our leaders saying we must "go forward."

Must have just broken moments ago, I only see the story on CNN.com, not MSNBC or my Apple News feed or NYT or WP alerts yet.
