A North Carolina man who spent 24 years behind bars for a murder he has long said he did not commit has been pardoned by the state’s governor.

Dontae Sharpe has been out of prison since 2019 and the pardon allows him to apply for compensation of up to $750,000 for his wrongful conviction.

“Mr Sharpe and others who have been wrongly convicted deserve to have that injustice fully and publicly acknowledged,” the governor, Roy Cooper, said.

Well, after waiting 2 years (!), his pardon should be a nice bonus for the holidays. Hortensis Nov 2021 #7

Second I’m glad he was pardoned.

Third, do they ever find the person who literally did the crime? We never hear those findings in most of these cases.

The cops, prosecutors, judges, witnesses? Where is their responsibility in cases like this?

He didn't commit the crime, what is there to pardon? The man should sue the state for millions more for 24 years of his life taken away from him.

For him and all those who fought for his release and then for this pardon.

Not that it's over for him, or them.

Sharpe thanked Cooper but called out a criminal justice system he considers "corrupt." He said he planned to celebrate Friday evening with his family and will continue to press for other inmates to receive justice.

"My freedom is still incomplete as long as there's still people going to prison wrongfully, if there's still people in prison wrongfully and there's still people that are waiting on pardons."
