(12,007 posts)Wonder what it was ? Pandemic?
CivicGrief
(147 posts)He implemented an intentional slowdown and is as compromised with conflicts of interest as anyone can be. You might remember that there was an election in the fall, and many people voted by mail.

(13,879 posts)He pointed out a relevant fact. There is no doubt about the damage DeJoy did and is continuing to do the USPS.

(147 posts)it seems MichMan was giving DeJoy cover, or at least the benefit of the doubt that DeJoy doesn't deserve. I can't wait until he is no longer Postmaster General.

(11,760 posts)Are you saying that the pandemic accounts for the slowdown?
Please elaborate on your statement.
MichMan
(12,007 posts)He was saying throughout last year that absenteeism averaged 30% or more. At the same time, package volumes set a record due to people being furloughed or working from home.
Not very surprising that record volumes of packages and low staffing might result in delays of service
CivicGrief
(147 posts)not the only reason, expert testimony of a single letter carrier excluded.

(11,760 posts)The bigger problem is the there was very likely nothing done to address the situation. Postal workers are considered essential workers, yet nothing seems to have been done to allow them to maintain their work rate. The delay rate as continued to increase as we learn to live with COVID-19.
The problem isn't the environment. The problem is a man who was hired specifically to waylay the USPS in an effort to turn public sentiment from it, so that it can be privatized. USPS has been targeted by Republicans for a LONG time.

(12,007 posts)Where is the rest of it?
If it continued to decline, that would point to DeJoy. If it went up, that would support that there were other causes, like Covid.

(65,515 posts)Your specious protestations to the contrary.
The DECLARED (by DeJoy himself) intent was to sacrifice service where necessary to streamline & reduce cost.
They KNEW they were going to see service declines.
And, with all that, the saving are a pittance for an organization that big.
DeJoy & his minions missed or ignored the real source of any financial pinch, so they attacked a target that wasn't a cause.
In my town, there was NEVER a worker absentee issue. The building was fully staffed, the carriers were all on their routes.
So, now we have dueling anecdotes.
I'm going with holding DeJoy accountable because he admitted he was doing exactly what happened.

(15,177 posts)My postal friend here in a Detroit suburb indicated deJoy was doing all things possible to delay deliveries, including the destruction of automated mail sorting machines.
Remember election night? The Heinous Anus was claiming victory while the mail-in ballots were yet to be counted in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and a whole bunch of other states that flipped from red in 2016 to blue in 2020.

(68,917 posts)Service has plummeted under this joker. He needs to go...corrupt as the longest day of the year. He is one that I would not be surprised to see in jail at some point.

(8,930 posts)I have been fined late fees after mailing bills the day after I get them, and are mailed 15-20 days before due date. My VA meds, required to be mailed out, I get 5-8 days after script runs out. I end up delivering multiple pieces of mail around my neighborhood that are put in my box. I have been using mail the same way for 40+ years, NEVER an issue before DeJoy. The intention is to destroy USPS to go private. The GQP plan for everything. Medicare Advantage is doing exactly that, and are within a year, maybe 2 to crash Medicare and take control. Was trying to not say fuck again today in a post. But Fuck DeJoy.

De ass not being fired, for cause is one of my biggest disappointments of current admin

(45,689 posts)DeJoy is Republican efficiency exemplified. His revolutionary reforms made the mail slower and more expensive when Americans needed it most during pandemic. And of course they use the pandemic as the excuse when it is several factors. GOP makes no secret of the fact they want to privatize and/or end the postal service by claiming it's inefficient.

(16,841 posts)most Goopers hate USPS. Doesn't line their pockets. Therefore it must be killed. Same with everything, all the way up to the entire planet.
