(17,376 posts)I ordered a complete dinner from Whole Foods but it will no doubt come with some kind of homemade cranberry concoction. Thats why first thing tomorrow Im off to Safeway to get real Ocean Spray Cranberry sauce that jiggles like in the pic!

This year, I'll have that so we can listen to the sound, but I'm also making a fresh cranberry dressing with dried cherries and spices. Yummmmmmm.

(32,103 posts)But, the best cranberry sauce, nonetheless. Some of the homemade sauces made with fresh berries are pretty darned good, too.

(28,095 posts)but she'd use her egg slicer to produce uniform slices - a lovely presentation. My sister-in-law picked that up from her so it remains a tradition. And, I agree with you about how good it is on sandwiches.
When my eldest nephew was about 3 (he's 41 now) we were at my grandmother's and she put a bowl of sliced beets on the table. The poor kid thought they were sliced cranberries and had to have one. He took a big bite out of the beet, screamed "That's yuck!" and threw it back in the bowl. One of those awful adult moments when you have to correct a child's behavior while trying so hard not to laugh.

(9,901 posts)I offset grilled a 13 pounder a week ago last Friday. We can get those "take and bake" sandwich rolls at one of the local super markets. This option is all but perfect for turkey sandwiches as we freeze them and then toss them in the toaster oven as needed. I'll probably grill another hen this Tuesday, and will pick up at least two cans of cranberry sauce with it.
This picture is from a little over a week ago, about mid-way through the cook. I am used a Butter, Maple syrup, and Kentucky Bourbon (decent) baste, then finished it with a glaze by reducing the baste with added brown sugar. Not bad even though I do say so myself.
On Edit: I work the night shift from home, therefore mostly grill at night. You can see some of my bees who died on the metal separator between BBQ hoods. Even though it was in the dead of night, the sugar content of the baste drew a couple of dozen bees that would buzz the grill, especially when I turn on lights to check on things.

(17,028 posts)Homemade cranberry sauce is so easily. 1 cup water, 1cup sugar and 1 bag of cranberries. Cook until the cranberries quit popping. For a little extra flavor add 1 tablespoon of Grand Mariner.

(11,691 posts)My mom would slice it up so it didn't look like it came out of a can. My husbands homemade cranberry sauce is much better. Fresh cranberries, apples and oranges with a hint of mint. Yummy.

(81,612 posts)Add sugar to taste and let it all soak in together for several hours or even overnight.
That was our one of our family tradition dishes. Made it every year when my mom was cooking the big dinner.
But the canned version has its own appeal. Sculptural, too!

(11,691 posts)His is also from an old family recipe. He's had to modify it somewhat by not adding as much sugar as he used to due to my diabetes. I'm not sure if he's making it this year or not. We're forgoing the usual turkey and having grilled salmon instead.

(14,505 posts)Most of the country folks where I was raised in middle Tennessee made that as one of the Thanksgiving and Christmas deserts, along with pecan pie, coconut cake and lots of other sweets. I'm sure I still have my mom's recipe somewhere here. I think they mixed it up somehow and then it chilled in the fridge for a while.
She made a similar lemon one that was light as a feather that was to die for but I don't remember what was in it except fine chopped pineapple and I assume lemon Jello. It was sort of creamy and just melted in the mouth. When I was in college in the 60s, she made it a point to make one for me each year when I came home for the holiday.
Lordy, I miss than woman.
Yum!
