Controversial Teddy Roosevelt statue moving from NYC museum to North Dakota

NEW YORK — The Rough Rider is mounting up and moving on.

An American Museum of Natural History statue of former President Theodore Roosevelt, which has been criticized for glorifying colonialism and racial discrimination, is being relocated to North Dakota.

For 80 years the Roosevelt statue stood sentry outside the museum, riding a horse and towering over an African man and a Native American man. Roosevelt’s own descendants conceded the depiction is “troubling” and signed off on the statue’s removal.

Now, T.R. is headed for Medora, North Dakota, where the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is set to open in 2026 — the 250th anniversary of the United States.

He tried to limit corporate influence in government, conservation,, and and the square deal.

But yeah, he was a colonialist too.

Maybe we should just stop with any statues - all of which imply glorification.

Both the black man and native American are shown subservient.

Walking near the White House, across from the Department of Commerce, there’s a monument to the Boy Scouts, comprised of three bronze figures: a scout, a naked man, and a lady in a toga. While the image of a hulking, shirtless (naked) man following on the heels of a young boy is undeniably a little uncomfortable, the statue was installed in 1964, having been commissioned by President Lyndon B. Johnson to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
