That is Dick Cheney standing next to his daughter (with a security person behind them). Alone on the Republican side for a moment of silence for the officers killed defending the Capitol a year ago.
The DU of old would not understand that Dick Cheney is somehow the least-untethered end of the GOP today.

His appearance sent so many messages-
I stand behind my daughter and what she is saying
By showing up and standing with her, I am refuting the GOP's position on backing Trump
I am badass enough to make this statement at such a critical and public time.
Take heed, you Trump lovin' GOPers - you are now on my enemies list. And you dare not do battle with me, because I have more power than all of you. You mess with my daughter, you mess with me. And you do not want to mess with me...

People can be such mixed bags. Some love their country and hate its inhabitants. Some people die too young, and others live too long. Some, like Pence and Quayle, can shine in the critical moment and suck regularly.

(47,774 posts)I suppose that is what makes Trump the most vile person on the planet. He is never a mixed bag and he never shines in critical moments. At least he is consistent though - a monster through and through, forever and ever.

(22,002 posts)It's a telling scene in another way, too. It was Cheney and his peers who were responsible for sowing the seeds of today's GOP. They used another national tragedy, 9/11, to drive a partisan wedge down the middle of the country, and fanned the flames of the "with us or against us" mentality -- the idea that you either stood unquestioningly with the GOP or you were a traitor to America -- to gain and retain power. As part of their electoral strategy, they gave quiet legitimacy to the extremist rantings of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the rest.
Dick Cheney is not dumb -- he and his buddies knew that they were playing with fire. They just thought they could control it, and use it for their own personal gain. And of course, the fire got out of control and burned their house down. And now look at him, standing there on his own. Meanwhile the rest of his political party is somewhere else -- currently, trying to downplay a deadly partisan assault on the U.S. Capitol Building by Republicans who wanted to violently overturn a presidential election won by a Democrat.
That's Cheney's legacy. He's doing the right thing by standing up in this manner, of course. But I wonder if he feels even the slightest twinge of responsibility.

(81,708 posts)Cheney says he will support Trump
By Tom LoBianco, CNN
Updated 5:44 AM EDT, Sat May 7, 2016
Former Vice President Dick Cheney will support Donald Trump, he told CNN Friday, an important move as the presumptive Republican nominee is encountering intense resistance from senior members of his own party.
The announcement makes Cheney one of the few Republican Party elders to announce their support of Trump and comes a day after House Speaker Paul Ryan told CNN he is just not ready to back Trump.
Former President George W. Bush, who Cheney served, said this week he would skip this summers Republican convention where Trump will be formally nominated. Former President George H.W. Bush and John McCain and Mitt Romney, the GOPs 2008 and 2012 nominees, also dont plan to attend the convention.

(1,356 posts)Cheney's long histories of cardiovascular disease and periodic need for urgent health care raised questions of whether he was medically fit to serve in public office.[201] Having smoked approximately 3 packs of cigarettes per day for nearly 20 years,[202] Cheney had his first of five heart attacks on 18 June 1978,[203] at age 37. Subsequent heart attacks in 1984, 1988, on 22 November 2000, and on 22 February 2010 resulted in moderate contractile dysfunction of his left ventricle.[204][205][clarification needed] He underwent four-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting in 1988, coronary artery stenting in November 2000, urgent coronary balloon angioplasty in March 2001, and the implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator in June 2001.[204]
On September 24, 2005, Cheney underwent a six-hour endo-vascular procedure to repair popliteal artery aneurysms bilaterally, a catheter treatment technique used in the artery behind each knee.[206] The condition was discovered at a regular physical in July, and was not life-threatening.[207] Cheney was hospitalized for tests after experiencing shortness of breath five months later. In late April 2006, an ultrasound revealed that the clot was smaller.[206]
On March 5, 2007, Cheney was treated for deep-vein thrombosis in his left leg at George Washington University Hospital after experiencing pain in his left calf. Doctors prescribed blood-thinning medication and allowed him to return to work.[208] CBS News reported that during the morning of November 26, 2007, Cheney was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and underwent treatment that afternoon.[206]
On July 12, 2008, Cheney underwent a cardiological exam; doctors reported that his heartbeat was normal for a 67-year-old man with a history of heart problems. As part of his annual checkup, he was administered an electrocardiogram and radiological imaging of the stents placed in the arteries behind his knees in 2005. Doctors said that Cheney had not experienced any recurrence of atrial fibrillation and that his special pacemaker had neither detected nor treated any arrhythmia.[209] On October 15, 2008, Cheney returned to the hospital briefly to treat a minor irregularity.[210]
On January 19, 2009, Cheney strained his back "while moving boxes into his new house". As a consequence, he was in a wheelchair for two days, including his attendance at the 2009 United States presidential inauguration.[211][212]
On February 22, 2010, Cheney was admitted to George Washington University Hospital after experiencing chest pains. A spokesperson later said Cheney had experienced a mild heart attack after doctors had run tests.[205] On June 25, 2010, Cheney was admitted to George Washington University Hospital after reporting discomfort.[213]
In early-July 2010, Cheney was outfitted with a left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute to compensate for worsening congestive heart failure.[214] The device pumped blood continuously through his body.[215][216] He was released from Inova on August 9, 2010,[217] and had to decide whether to seek a full heart transplant.[218][219] This pump was centrifugal and as a result he remained alive without a pulse for nearly fifteen months.[220]
On March 24, 2012, Cheney underwent a seven-hour heart transplant procedure at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Woodburn, Virginia. He had been on a waiting list for more than 20 months before receiving the heart from an anonymous donor.[221][222] Cheney's principal cardiologist, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, advised his patient that "it would not be unreasonable for an otherwise healthy 71-year-old man to expect to live another 10 years" with a transplant, saying in a family-authorized interview that he considered Cheney to be otherwise healthy.[223]

(29,685 posts)Maybe it's just him still supporting his daughter. Everyone knows today's GOP has no respect for her. He flies in and stands beside her as the former veep who still holds lots of crazy level power with security contractors and energy contractors worldwide. (Read it as the people who can dry up most big dark money political contributions and the people who can track someone's every movement.)
I don't see it as rehabilitation of his image. I see it as a doubling down. He's there to remind them that he has power the Trumplikans can't imagine and to maybe think twice before they take aim at his kid. Idc how old your kid is- that's still your kid. And 80 something year old parents get just as defensive when they see their kid smeared by a group.
The rest is secondary.

I have a grudging respect for his support for his daughter against the Trump fellators.
I also have a grudging respect that this man ran a legitimate multinational corporation, as opposed to Trump who made his living as a grifter, carnival barker and con artist, not to mention peddling his ass to Putin.
Lastly, grudging respect that Dick Cheney is an immensely powerful man, who demonstrated by his actions today that he has some decency and decorum.
And, with his CIA connections, I wonder if the traitors are going to live to regret putting their chips on Trump and Putin.

This one guy was tripping me and pushing me and kicking me, Geller later recalled to The Washington Post. At one point, I thought if they knocked me over, I could have literally got stomped to death.
Because the ersatz protesters wore button-up shirts and ties more befitting congressional staffers rather than, say, random people who happened to be on vacation in Florida, the incident became known as the Brooks Brothers Riot. And indeed, its participants include a whos who of GOP operatives then and now. As Rachel Maddow memorably summarized, the spontaneous protest photo above included 10 GOP staffers, including aides to Reps. Tom Delay, Van Hilleary, Don Young and Jim Ross Lightfoot, and Sens. Fred Thompson and Jim DeMint. Then-Rep. John Sweeney set the whole thing off by urging a crowd to shut it down. Convicted felon and President Donald Trumps longtime adviser Roger Stone claims to have been the riots architect, although his account is disputed by Bush consultant Brad Blakeman, who claims credit as well.
This mobs actual target was not just Geller but the process in which he played just a small part: the constitutionally mandated and imminently feasible fair count of all votes cast by Miami-Dade citizens. By creating the perception of public unrest, the rioters made clear to county officials that a social cost would be extracted if they continued to perform these legal obligations.
The gambit worked. The Gore campaign, fixated on and trusting of the legal process, was caught flat-footed, and had not planned a comparable counter-mobilization. Mere hours after the riot, the board voted unanimously to suspend the count, citing, in part, the protests. This was perceived as not being an open and fair process. That weighed heavy on our mind, the supervisor of elections, David Leavy, told The New York Times.
