Opinion: The Supreme Courts order against Donald Trump is even worse for him than it appears
By George T. Conway III
Trump lost the case in virtually record time. He sued the committee and the National Archives on Oct. 18, lost in the district court on Nov. 9, lost in the court of appeals on Dec. 9 and lost in the Supreme Court on Jan. 19. And so, today, the Jan. 6 committee has hundreds of documents Trump desperately wanted kept under wraps.

Judge Patricia A. Millett
The Committee has sound reasons, Millett wrote, for seeking presidential documents in particular as part of its investigation into the causes of the attack on the Capitol, for a simple reason: There is a direct linkage between the former President and the events of the day. Indeed, the court concluded, to allow the privilege of a no-longer-sitting President to prevail over Congresss need to investigate a violent attack on its home and its constitutional operations would gravely impair the basic function of the legislature.
In other words, the justices relied solely on the reasoning that Trumps claims were so paltry, his privilege arguments so weak, that Trump would have lost even were he still in office.
snip
The result was an even more devastating rejection of Trumps privilege claim in effect, an unambiguous, blanket holding by the Supreme Court that presidents who incite insurrections in office dont get to invoke executive privilege.

I love a story with a happy ending.

(70,654 posts)I might be wrong but I think that the real reason TFG guy fought so hard to stay in power because
he knew that once out of office he was facing lots of civil and criminal charges.
TFG is facing:
NY's A.G., Washington D.C.'s A.G., Fulton County, GA's D.A., Manhattan's D.A., the House's
Jan. 6th Committee, and the US DoJ (those Seditious Conspiracy charges against the Oath
Keepers are just the beginning ... I hope )
And he is being sued in civil court by a woman who claims he raped her and by a family member
who claims he stole millions of $s that were supposed to be hers.
******
BTW I want that murdering scum bag in prison and I live for the day I never have to hear about
him, his family, and thugs again. In 2016 The FBI and Mitch McConnell knew all about TFG's
connection to Russia but all we heard about was HRC's and the nothing burger that was her
emails and email server. I am convinced that if HRC hadn't had the election stolen from her
we would not be going through this pandemic now.

(12,673 posts)doesn't seem like you'd be able to delay forever
Botany
(70,654 posts)... has always been about delaying things. Last I heard was her team was trying to get a DNA
sample from TFG. Although, TFG has done so much shit that it is hard to keep 'em all straight.

(10,252 posts)1. His gargantuan ego cannot tolerate being rejected by the voters. Being labeled a loser.
2. To continue the grift. Using the office to direct money flow into his pockets. Setting up all sorts of campaign contribution channels to harvest cash. Pilferring money ear-marked for the inauguration. Keeping his hotels and resorts booked by sycophants and lobbyist who curry his favor.
3. Power is addicting and the presidential spotlight makes him feel like a god.

Then again, since, apparently, a sitting POTUS can't be prosecuted and we can't depend on the Rs to impeach an R POTUS, I guess the laws don't much matter. Bummer.

you know you've hit the criminal big time when you have to go for the presidency to keep yourself out of prison.
Botany
(70,654 posts).... building up his ego he wanted nothing to do with the real work of being POTUS but with
A.G.s Sessions and Barr and Assistant A.G. Rosenstein* protecting him he thought he was untouchable
and he started grifting big time as POTUS but even TFG knew that he had done all kinds of shit
and Robert Mueller said he should be prosecuted once he left office. David Cay Johnston has
figured his and his family's grift @ the White House was $1.7 billion.
The rulings by all those courts means one thing and that is "the jig is up" for Donny.
* fucking weasel scumbag
NJCher
(35,832 posts)The $1.7 billion. David Cay Johnston is very credible.
However he got there, though, that's the criminal big time.

him along with staying and paying to spend the night at his resort. And to think they impeached
President Clinton over a consensual b.j. and stopped him from getting bin Laden.

Botany
(70,654 posts)SCOTUS ruled that his claim of executive privilege had no merit and so his papers and stuff could
go to the House's Jan. 6th Committee. Only Clarence Thomas voted for keeping the papers secret
and that could be because his wife Ginni helped pay for and set up the 1/6/21 attempted coup.

(1,910 posts)They are trying to navigate this perfectly, hope Trump gets taken out legally, denounce how terrible it is, keep the Trump base who would never vote for any Dem.
I think its Desantis as their chosen one. They will try to rebrand him on some more polarizing issues, say he stood up to Trump but not too much.
But yeah, Mitch and the Repug power want their party back from Trump, while not giving the MAGAs any alternative to vote for but their next guy.
