Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has vetoed a congressional map sent to him by Republican lawmakers.

HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf has vetoed a congressional map sent to him by Republican lawmakers, leaving the monumental job of picking Pennsylvania’s next district lines to the state courts.

In a veto message issued late Wednesday, Wolf said the map failed “the test of fundamental fairness.”

“The people of Pennsylvania deserve a fair election map that promotes accountability and responsiveness to voters and is drawn in an open and honest way,” he said. “The public deserves a fair map completed in a bipartisan manner; the General Assembly failed to adopt one.”

The map sent to Wolf by the GOP-controlled legislature was initially drawn by Amanda Holt — a noted redistricting reform advocate and former Lehigh County commissioner — and championed by state Rep. Seth Grove (R., York). It was amended by Grove’s legislative committee after GOP members of the panel criticized how their counties were split.

We all know that incumbents are working hard to keep their districts untouched as long as possible, just to maintain their own electability. That has always been the reason behind gerrymandering - and Dems are (probably) just a guilty as the Repukes. Or they would be guilty, if they had the chance to do it.

I'm not saying "both sides" - I'm saying the "incumbents" (D and R) - and that's why they must step back and have no say in how any new District Map gets drawn up. The Governor has no dog in this hunt because he can't run for re-election. The new district map needs to be an executive (Governor) rather than legislative (State Legislature) prerogative.

Our other problem is that the 2020 Census is flawed due to political shenanigans and poor management by the Former President and the Repukes who ran the Census. We're stuck with bad numbers, especially in the city population centers that are (guess what?) also Democratic-voting concentrations.

Any map that gets drawn up by incumbents using bad numbers is bound to be flawed. It's bound to favor Republican incumbents, and that's why Pennsylvania is so messed up.
